I’m visiting Brisbane in June for a conference and staying out there for two months afterwards, wondering if anyone had any recommendations for possible ringing opportunities or just birding generally, planning on travelling about a bit and going to NZ as well.

New species described! Scientists unveil a fascinating find in Indonesia In a new study, published in the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists’ Club and led by a BirdLife scientist, a colourful honeyeater has been described from the little-known island of Babar in…

New species discovered! 🐦✨

The Banda Myzomela was previously thought to be two subspecies, new research confirms they are in fact three distinct speciesβ€”differing in plumage, size, and, most importantly, song. 🎢

Absolute highlight of the year was getting back to Kenya, teaching on field course with Uni. Also spent a lot of time ringing at my own site since getting my C. Tripit, breeding spotfly and redstart the best. Plus 200 species exactly in the UK, 12 of them new.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND BIRDS - THE FUTURE
Cley Marsh 2020? Will global warming bring back Great Reed Warblers, Black Kites and Black-winged Stilts to breed in Britain?
Likewise, if the Scottish mountain tops lose their distinctive Arctic-Alpine character, with their specialized avifauna supplanted by widespread species, what does it matter if they are opened up to tourism? British conservationists will have some difficult decisions during the coming decades, as the effects of global warming begin to become apparent.
Farther afield, the conservation of existing wetland areas, particularly those used as stopover sites for migrants in western Europe and Africa, is likely to assume a crucial significance. Judging which ones we should save, and which will inevitably disappear, will not be easy. Ultimately, we may find that we are powerless against the combination of natural and man-made pressures we have set in motion. Like passengers on a rollercoaster, we can only hope that the ride will eventually come to an end, and that when it does, we and the birds will have survived.

Some really nice Blackbirds moving through atm. Along with plenty of Redwing and Fieldfare still. Although the Fieldfare are eluding the nets.
