I'm inclined to agree, but I feel like with fighting games specifically, which are really defined by their characters, not including the ones you introduce is just a step back.

Sorry, I zeroed in on "go without." I would also encourage emulation, but I also acknowledge a lot of people don't want to put in the effort to going through the steps to learn how to use an emulator, search for ROMS, etc. It's an extension of the researching a PC over getting a console debate.

Broader access is good, overall. But the all-important execution of those principles is what makes it much more difficult.

Again, that's not entirely fair. Especially with how the game industry and discourse is. These companies very much want you to buy the next big game and talk about it, and make you feel stupid if you didn't get it. It shouldn't just be a "get what you can afford or get out kind of deal."

This is a fair point. It's kind of the way that the ROG Xbox Ally isn't really an Xbox thing, but just a ROG Ally with Xbox branding and some Xbox onboarding? And then we circle back around to affordability vs. specs, it's a whole big thing

So yeah, that's definitely a consideration point. That's why I was saying, you can see historically why console gaming took off in the West (and Japan, where the tech was being developed) a bit more than PC gaming. In the West, owning a decent PC even today is EXPENSIVE.

Again, not to say you're wrong. Games have been optimized pretty decently on PC in recent years, but I really think it genuinely depends on who you are, the effort you're putting in to finding something, where you're shopping etc., or even just what your gaming preferences are

I agree. We're seeing it now already with how much AI Slop crowds the Nintendo eShop because grifters are utilizing 0 effort tools to crap out games as cheaply as possible. Big companies would do the same. But I think there should also be some kind of middle ground, you know?

That might depend on where you buy. I bought my PS5 in Canada for just under $700 (and it was the digital GoWR bundle). I would be hard-pressed to find a decent gaming laptop for that price anywhere in Canada. By contrast, my Alineware that I bought in Brazil was closer to $3000

Most people don't have high-end gaming rigs unless they're dedicated hardcore gamers willing to put in the time/money/effort to build one so they can play games on the higher specs (something most consoles can allow by default for cheaper). Its a very different landscape.

Keep in mind, they did say they're coming from a 3rd world country perspective, where owning a PC /is/ probably more common than having a gaming console, cause they're multipurpose. But I would say it's fair that most people have at least a mid-low-end laptop/PC for work or basic browsing.

I dunno if I would say "nobody is entitled to the games they want" because I do think lowering of barriers is a good thing. Idealistically, yes companies would have to innovate their tech to persuade the consumer to go with that, and the more you monopolize, the less incentive companies have

I'm just saying. You're not wrong on principle, but there's a lot of history, economics, politics like...so many things that have gone into shaping the gaming landscape we have. It's not as easy to say "exclusives bad, tear it all down."

That is interesting. Although keep in mind that having a decent graphics card only gets you so far. A lot of games recommend an i7 processor, but really require something in the lower i9s. My old i7 could barely run Phasmaphobia, let alone something like COD😅

Well I appreciate that perspective since I am currently living in Brazil and see the state of gaming and tech firsthand. So while I've said before, I fundamentally agree there should be fewer borders to entry, the actual reality is a lot more difficult to parse.
