“It makes no sense to claim that there’s a war on cars and motorists, when if anything, there’s been a war on walking. Over the last 70 years, human settlements have become less dense through the deliberate subsiding of driving, including land-use laws that promote sprawl…” #UrbanTruth

Also, XFCE is standard on (a abridged list i must say):
* Certain fuguita images
* Some GhostBSD images (especially the experimental Gershwin desktop environment Xfce-GNUStep hybrid)
* Tribblix
* Xubuntu
* OS108
* MX Linux

And a great amount of many others…

a hex dump from the illumos modular debugger, having printed the value of the variable "gdt0", then dumped 0x90 bytes of stuff from the address that printed

there are like five things i think are remarkably nice about illumos and one of them is definitely that the philosophy is "look if you're root, it's your computer, do what you want"

yes, i want to know what's in the gdt. you'll tell me? nice. i might want to patch it. -W and we're cool? cool

Eight pedestrians wait to cross the road while a double-decker bus passes by. There are road markings indicating a contraflow cycle lane.

Everybody walks or wheels, even if just for very local journeys. Streets often fail to meet pedestrians' needs however.

What would make walking easier in Cambridge? Read what Cambridge Living Streets' Linda Jones has to say:

Walks Programme Our aim is to encourage and support everyday walking and wheeling in Cambridge. The route maps on this site record key local walking routes in the city, highlighting their attractions but also…

Cambridge Living Streets, in addition to our campaign activities, organizes a series of gentle walks that are free to all.

I’ve just put the full calendar for our spring walks on the website:

Support bus travel by responding to the Local Plan! A consultation is underway on the 20-year masterplan for our area. Make sure that you have your say, especially on the needs of bus users and the importance of easy bus travel! The Greater Cambridge Draft Local Plan sets out where new homes and workplaces could be built in the region and how infrastructure, community facilities, and services would support them.

As the other 50%, turnout was disappointing.

I don’t think it’s entirely poor publicity, the campaign groups have also been banging on about it for months, but I suspect there’s a combination of missing an entire audience with a lot of consultation fatigue.

There was poor advertising of the events to start with, and then they have changed, added, and removed events with no notification whatsoever. It’s bad enough for those of us actively tracking, I hate to think how the general public get any information at all.

Speaking up for bus users at Council meetings High up the ‘to-do’ list of the Cambridge Area Bus Users Executive Committee is to take steps to bring the needs of bus users to the attention of our local politicians. With this in mind, we have resolved to ask public questions at local council meetings when we believe an issue should be brought up the agenda. At the 17th November 2025 meeting of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s Transport Committee…

Opinion: Boosting buses across Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire - Cambridgeshire Sustainable Travel Alliance This article was first published as an opinion piece in the Cambridge Independent on 26 November 2025 (p.29) [paywall] under the title ‘Politicians must be bold and back the bus all the way.’ Although...

How can buses get a boost across Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire? And why should they?

In our new blog we say that local politicians should back the bus at every turn.

NEW BLOGPOST: “The Cambridge Growth Company risks making the same mistake as the GCP on light rail” cambridgetownowl.com/2025/11/27/t... Why on earth would they restrict themselves to 1974-era boundaries and not extend it a short distance to cover nearby market towns?!? 😡

Damn #OmniOS is fun! I really wish #FreeBSD had SMF, such a neat service management framework: `svcs -xv` is a killer feature. The only meh is a lot of reliance on GNU tools in the illumos userspace toolset.

Illumos - Wikipedia

apparently OpenSolaris lives on! As illumos en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illumos

**illumos**
An actual Unix system that's a fork of the final OpenSolaris release. Analagous to Linux in that it's a core ecosystem that distros like OmniOS and OpenIndiana are built around.

I remember that, and by Sainsbury's always struck me as being in the wrong place - a constrained site, poorly connected, and too close to the existing station so it duplicates access for a lot of people. A bit further out, by Fulbourn Tesco, offers better bus links and expands the catchment.

MSFT and Apple spend billions on building Windows and MacOS! Yet, their OSs are unusable, bloated and uncontrollable freaks!

Long live open-source!

Of course, this was back in a time when people had actually used Unix.

You can still use Unix, sort of, for nothing. Install an illumos distro. That's should be very, very roughly System V Release 4.

Not to mention the fact that it’s Linux that usually borrows from innovations that the BSD and Solaris & Illumos communities created, for decades, not the other way around.

I might have a fascination with retro OSes like Tribblix, *BSD, or AIX. I might put vim-like keybindings on everything. I might be enthralled by programming for COM+, AWT, and straight x86 assembly. I might use a tiling WM.

But let’s clear one thing up: I will never, EVER switch to Dvorak. Ever.

Hm, that might not work, the Ultra 1 had support ripped out a long time ago - the UltraSPARC-I cpu was never supported in 64-bit mode as I recall (although the E variant at least has a supported network card).
