Mewgenics is great.

For everyone else, people who have never played Earthbound, it's probably not worth your time. There are better NES/Famicom JRPGs which you should probably hit up first. 6/10

There's a lot of heart here and it has the trademarks of the franchise - it's a Japanese take on the United States filled with colorful NPC dialogue. That said, it's a late 80s/early 90s Famicom/NES JRPG. So it can be a little grindy and a little vague with the narrative.

Mother/Earthbound Zero/Earthbound Beginnings: Mother 2/Earthbound is my favorite game of all time but I never sat down and engaged with the original seriously before this. I'd play for like 20 minutes and then stop. Randomly decided to actually engage with it for real.

I feel really bad for them. Did not have a chance. People were frothing at the mouth for this to fail given its status of being the last reveal at the VGAs. Shadow drop probably was its best chance at success.

Of course, being given basically no time to 'right the ship' is a big problem too.

I basically have a series x to play weird games like that on console. Boy what a waste of money. It was also the best way to play stuff like MGS2 and 3 until a couple years ago. But I agree with you, they should just do it already! Let collections be complete!

Also, yeah, it's weird that XIII has not been given a collection yet. That game was rumored to have one like a decade ago and it's still not here. I think people are really quick to dogpile but haven't played for themselves in a while - I think it's mostly decent! ...ending blows but whatever.

I completely understand this urge. Sometimes it's really interesting engaging with mechanics like that even though in the back of my brain, I get why they're gone. It's why stuff like Shenmue is fascinating, they'd QoL the hell out of everything...while sometimes experiencing the grime is nice.

Oh...it's definitely a product of its time but it's worth at least experiencing. If they were truly brave, they'd port it and then resurrect the pack-in tetra master that the game shipped with (and has since died)

Probably cynical, but I think 2K is scummy.

My guess is that they'll 'listen to fans' in three months and introduce an option to unlock everything - but to make it 'fair to those who put in the work', they'll charge $10 or something for the privilege.

I really hate the Binding of Isaac aesthetic/sense of humor, so I do really want Mewgenics, but that is a bit of a hurdle.

Respect this game a whole lot. Could have just been a cash grab, OoT but MORE. Instead they went with something that has a lot of creativity to make up for a lack of budget, art through adversity. That said, as I age, I think I'm leaning towards OoT more. 9/10

Also dungeon design is hit-or-miss, which is a problem when there's only four dungeons. However, this game is more about understanding the world and how the NPCs in it tick, so it fills a different need than the typical Zelda fair. It feels spiritually similar to Shenmue.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: Apparently I last played this in 2020 according to text logs. Still a great game but this playthrough made me notice a couple things that were in a blind spot: boss battles in this game (except the snow temple) suck.

There's just zero chance I trust discord with my ID info. Luckily I don't use it enough for it to be a real problem.
