The region in which Avisoa lives is all too frequently beset by drought, food insecurity, and poverty. Our efforts are not limited to planting trees; we are focused on growing entire ecosystems that support biodiversity and communities alike.

A woman poses with a shovel on a steep, grassy hill in front of lush rainforest.
Meet Avisoa from Manombo, a small community near the imperiled rainforest of Ivohiboro in Madagascar. She is one of thousands of people that have joined our reforestation efforts, planting Foxhole Forests, digging firebreaks, and collecting seeds.

We don't recommend harvesting any plants from the wild without proper training and knowledge of laws and best practices, especially if you aren't experienced in plant identification. It's always best to leave wildflowers be so other people (and pollinators) can enjoy them.

A Common Camas flower inflorescence (Camassia quamash) blooms in the Palouse Prairie.
But why is it called Deathcamas? The plants superficially resemble Camas (genus Camassia, shown here), which are generally edible and were staples of many indigenous diets. Want to tell the difference? Deathcamas flowers are relatively small and white, while Camas flowers are much larger and purple.

The bulbs of these species are extremely toxic and should never be consumed. However, Deathcamas is a vital component of the endangered Palouse ecosystem, particularly for pollinators. Just because it can't be eaten doesn't mean it shouldn't be valued!

Today, we celebrate the 2 Deathcamas species of the Palouse Prairie, Meadow Deathcamas (T. venenosum, pictured) & Foothill Deathcamas (T. paniculatum). Their names are intimidating, & for good reason

In the effort to restore the Palouse Prairie, no project is too small.
Not the focus of the whole piece, but High Country News wrote a wonderful article on our efforts that opens with a visit to the cemetery from the above pic.

We work in several of these in Palouse Prairie of eastern WA! Pioneer cemeteries are some of the last remaining intact patches of this endangered ecosystem. Every square foot counts when there's less than half a percent left!
