A crowned lemur on the forest floor with its tongue out. It has grey fur on its body and red, grey, and black fur on its face and head.
This crowned lemur may be showing off that tongue, but when it comes to staying connected, it’s all about the sound! Crowned lemurs often split into small foraging subgroups of 1–4 individuals and use loud, “piercing yaps” to keep track of one another when they’re far apart.

A red-bellied lemur rests on a tree branch with its eyes half-closed.
#SnoozySunday Even when they look ready for a nap, red-bellied lemurs are devoted family members! These lemurs typically live in small groups made up of an adult breeding pair and their offspring—usually two to ten individuals.

A golden bamboo lemur clings to a bamboo stalk in a lush green forest, gripping the stem with its hands and feet while nibbling on fresh bamboo shoots.
#FunFactFriday This golden bamboo lemur may be focused on its meal, but did you know these primates are expert tree travelers? They live in social groups within territories up to 80 hectares—yet usually travel less than 1,312 feet (400 meters) a day!

A black-and-white ruffed lemur sits perched on a thin branch, its long black tail hanging straight down beneath it.
Black and White Ruffed lemurs are the largest quadrupedal lemurs in Madagascar. Their bodies measure about 20 inches long, but that extra-long tail—stretching around 23 inches—does some serious work, helping them balance as they move through the rainforest canopy.

A female red-fronted brown lemur sits alert and facing the camera. Her reddish-brown fur contrasts with a black stripe running down the center of her face. Her light brown eyes stand out against her dark nose as she looks calmly ahead
Red-fronted brown lemurs are sexually dichromatic—which means males and females wear totally different looks!
All red-fronted brown lemur babies are born looking like adult males! Females don’t start developing their signature coloring until they’re about 3–4 months old.

An indri leans back, head reared and mouth open mid-call, sending its song into the forest canopy.
Indris are the only lemurs that communicate by song. Their powerful, melodic calls rise and fall, echoing for miles to keep group members connected, warn neighbors to stay back, and even share details about who’s in the group. What else might their music be saying?

A silky sifaka with a pink face with some black markings and white fur.
Pretty in pink (and black)! 🩷 🖤
This silky sifaka is rocking a one-of-a-kind look. While all silky sifaka infants are born with black skin, they lose pigmentation as they age—resulting in faces that can be pink, black, or a beautiful mix of both. No two faces are exactly alike!

A pale fork-marked lemur hanging upside down from a tree branch at night, its eyes glowing in the darkness as it grips the branch with nimble limbs.
Fork-marked lemurs and African needle-clawed galagos are a classic case of convergent evolution—they’re both small, nocturnal, primates with strikingly similar looks and lifestyles. The twist? They live about 3,000 miles apart and aren’t closely related
