Color photograph of Dr. Marcia McNutt, prominent American geophysicist and president of the National Academy of Sciences. She is shown in a close-up head-and-shoulders portrait, resting her cheek on her right hand with elbow propped up, smiling warmly and directly at the camera with a bright, engaging expression. McNutt has shoulder-length light blonde hair styled in soft layers and wears subtle makeup. She is dressed in a dark blazer featuring a small circular lapel pin. Behind her, blurred bookshelves filled with volumes create a scholarly library or office setting, conveying approachability, leadership, and intellectual depth.

Geophysicist Marcia McNutt was elected the first female President of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) #OTD in 2016. #WomenInSTEM #geophysics

Higher Education in the Time of Fascist Plague What is at stake is far more than a rejection of gangster capitalism and the global misery it produces. The deeper danger lies in recognizing that education has become the primary battlefield in the c...

"What is required, then, is the radical reimagining of pedagogy. Higher education must reclaim academic freedom, dissent, critical thought, and democratic governance not as abstract principles but as urgent practices of resistance." #HigherEd

Despite Trump chaos, NSF avoided feared dip in research financing Number of new grants fell by 20%, but got larger, as funder braced for potential budget cut

🧪 NSF spending held at $8.17 billion. Yet the agency awarded 20% fewer grants while increasing their size. This defensive pivot limits future obligations ahead of substantial budget cuts proposed for 2026. #AcademicSky

For 61 years the #BBCWorldService has been broadcasting the latest in science via its weekly Science in Action programme. That dies in the next half hour, with this final edition, reflecting on the fall in trust in expertise driven by malign interests over recent years.

Isn’t that his job? It is hard enough getting a NSF grant in our disciplines, now it is OUR responsibility to also tell the public in addition to do the work, train the student, publish the paper, etc.?

The black-and-white historical photograph depicts E. Cora Hind, a pioneering Canadian agricultural journalist and the renowned "Oracle of Wheat," standing in a wheat field. She is dressed in period attire, including a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, round wire-rimmed glasses, a high-collared shirt, and a long woolen coat, with her hair pinned up. Hind is shown in profile view, facing slightly to the side with a serious expression, as she examines and holds a sheaf of mature wheat stalks in her hands, illustrating her hands-on method of crop yield assessment. The background consists of a vast expanse of wheat field under an open sky, emphasizing her fieldwork expertise.

Cora Ella Hind travelled 10,000 kilometres every year to survey crops in Western Canada.
She was so good at her predictions, farmers called her the Oracle of Wheat.
To them, she was the most trusted voice in agriculture.
This is the story of her fascinating life.
