Thinking again about the part in the Richter manga where it seems to indicate that he refuses to update his glasses even though his eyesight has changed (because the glasses were a gift from Aster).

I wonder if people who do not wear glasses understand how significant that is?

If you wear glasses that are too strong or too weak, it easily becomes uncomfortable in several ways.

It can hurt the eyes, and it can cause severe headaches very quickly if you try to use the wrong glasses for something.

He cherishes those glasses very much if he will not give them up even when they hurt his eyes. I think that is a very important and interesting detail.

(I had to get new glasses recently, and it has been troublesome to deal with, so I was thinking about this a lot)

Thinking about a twisted, tragic version of DotNW's "good" ending where Emil gets so wrapped up in living a full life in the name of another as a duty owed to the dead that he loses the ability to see himself as worthwhile, as a complete person, in and of himself and has to re-learn that.

(He hides them because nobody is allowed to know he isn't human anymore)

Vampire!Aster AU where Richter lets him drink his blood to sustain him.

Where this vampirism remains present in Emil, who is given blood from his monsters (he hides it from Marta). But Richter knows, and let's Emil drink from him, too, eventually.

...Also AU where Aster and Emil somehow exist and Aster drinks Emil's blood. Because that's just Enticing to imagine.

Or vampire!Ratatosk with Emil. That's also really Good.

Emil works so good as a character for angst, tragedy, and hurt/comfort because of the sheer amount of emotional fuckery he canonically goes through (especially when you look at the Bad End).

He's Made to suffer. ;_;

(It makes giving him a happy end feel better, too, IMO)

Probably why seeing art (official and fan) of him smiling and happy is so special, his smile is so important and he has been through so much
