That night, he lay awake thinking about what Grace had said about feeling safer with a white guy and thought that was a shitty thing to say to an Asian guy. He had to admit that she was probably right. An Asian woman would probably be less likely to be harassed by racist thugs if she was with a white guy. It goes back to caveman times, he supposed. One of a man’s essential roles was to protect his woman and children. Did that mean that racist assholes are lowering the value of Asian guys? I can’t fight, that’s for sure. Maybe we should live up to the stereotype and all become Bruce Lee and go around with nunchucks in our back pockets. Then maybe more Asian girls would go out with Asian guys. Or maybe if we had money. Money provided protection, too. It allowed you to take cabs at night and got you an apartment in a building with 24-hour security.
