Ha! No, I had no idea. I got frazil from a list of natural phenomenon with unusual names I was working on. Frazil, runnel, sastrugi..... virga, seiche, rime. I don't think I've ever been in an Exxon. All Mobil stations here.

Frazil and riffle sounds like it could be one of those blue drinks at the gas station.

I really appreciate these. In a strange way you're teaching me a lot about my own work. And it helps.

I took this photo of the carved eaves on the former Main Hall at the Fukagawa Fudล-dล Temple in Koto, Tokyo, Japan. This was before all the major renovations had been completed. I was there during March to celebrate hanami in honor of my granny, who was from Tokyo. These elegant carvings reflect the traditional Inami style indicative of the late Edo/early Meiji period.
In the lower left, elegant swirls of wooden waves surround a bird with wings spread and one leg out, navigating strong forces. Farther right, another bird is tucking into a curl, downward-facing, and riding the front wave with serene grace. The wood is a mixture of warm red and grey tones; its grain is striped and softly weather-worn. Thereโs a mid-line crack running the length of the beam overhead. In the lower right corner, shadows mask the inner temple.
My time at Fukagawa Fudล-dล inspired the haiku from my Tokyo journal:

a whirling sutra

This is a black and white landscape nature photo I took of Lake Champlain from the shore in Burlington Vermont.
Elegant rays fan over the glimmering lake. Winter sun's bright reflection glows atop the right surface of Champlain and stretches left into a thin line of light. Brooding clouds, the prominent horizon line, and a textured expanse of dark waves all add contrasting layers to the image. It was an effervescent moment that paused time, and inspired my latest senryu:
sparkling champlain
i sip
a string of pearls
Fun fact: Perlage is a wine (champagne) term to describe the continuous stream of small bubbles, often called a string of pearls, that rise inside the drinking glass.
