ASK EDDIE - March 5, 2026 FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this edition, we discuss Robert Duvall, the Japanese late era noir “Pale Flower” (1964), our favorite noir character actors, writer Jonathan Latimer’s screen plays, which modern actors would be best for a modern noir, the French 1973 farce “A Pain in the Ass” (“L'emmerdeur”) and more. The lightning round returns. On the cat front, we have two new and mysterious cast members. Timestamps and questions below: 0:05 Emily tribute, Bruno & Lino; Robert Duvall 20:34 Q1: Thoughts on Robert Duvall? 21:32 Q2: Your one allowed phone call from Dark City jail? 27:09 Q3: "The Brotherhood" a precursor to "The Godfather"? 29:11 Q4: "Pale Flower" a pristine piece of cinematic art? 36:38 Q5: Recalling foreign titles you've seen from France? Lightning Round 42:28 Q6a: "Mulholland Drive" on Noir Alley or TCM? 43:54 Q6b: Eddie as the sax player/victim in the Noir City poster? 44:25 Q6c: Is "Ice Harvest" noir? "Devil Thumbs a Ride" on blu-ray? 46:01 Q6d: Did Eve kill Birdie in "All About Eve"? 48:07 Q6e: "Night People" — noir or not? 53:37 Q7: James Ellroy involved in The Prowler restoration? 57:38 Q8: Have you seen "The Lowdown" on FX? 59:42 Q9: Favorite supporting noir character actors? 1:07:43 Q10: Favorite Jonathan Latimer screenplays? 1:14:06 Q11: Best contemporary actors for a true noir? 1:21:12 French film "A Pain in the Ass" , Billy Wilder's remake "Buddy Buddy" and "Avanti!", Wiliam Friedkin's "Killer Joe" , TCM festival, Bento the feral cat This week’s questions: 1. We just lost Robert Duvall. Any thoughts about Mr. Duvall? —Alan, San Anselmo, CA 2. Suppose that you were charged with a criminal offense in Dark City. Whom would you call with your one phone call? —Joe from Suffolk County, NY 3. “The Brotherhood” has gained more respect over the years as a worthy precursor to “The Godfather”. Your thoughts? —Jim, Chicago, IL 4. "Pale Flower" is a pristine piece of cinematic art. What do you think? —Michael 5. The question for you is: how do you recall what foreign titles you have seen from France? —David, Carmel Valley, CA 6. Speed Round: a. Will we one day have the pleasure of seeing “Mulholland Drive” on Noir Alley or TCM? —Malvina   b. Is Eddie Muller the saxophone player/victim in the 2026 Noir City Seattle poster? —Valerie c. “Ice Harvest”, noir or not? Any updates on getting a DVD or Blu-ray of Felix Feist's 1947 "The Devil Thumbs a Ride"? —Michael d. Did Eve kill Birdie because she know Birdie was on to her. —Coleman, Billerica, MA e. Danish noir alert! This is one of our Director of Communications @anne-hockens.bsky.social favorite Danish films and her favorite by Nicolas Winding Refn. Mads Mikkelsen gives an incredible performance as introverted video store clerk Lenny. This is a rare streaming opportunity.

I can vouch for nearly half of this lineup because seven of them played @noirfoundation.bsky.social events in San Francisco (though I sadly missed Roberto Gavaldón’s THE NIGHT FALLS) & I love Luis Buñuel’s CRIMINAL LIFE OF ARCHIBALDO DE LA CRUZ (I’ve yet to see his EL.) I wish Vancouver was nearer!

Another great episode of ASK EDDIE & ANNE with @eddiemuller.bsky.social from @noirfoundation.bsky.social on YouTube When I saw GWTW the entire 4K crowd was laughing not out of disrespect, but because we loved every iconic line. Got 3 great movie suggestions, THE SQUARE will probably be up first.
