Easiest co-sign. Clean air in schools is a no brainer. Labour should have done it. National should do it. If they care so much about ~the economy~ they should value the health of kids, teachers, and whānau. : our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/cl...

Yes - there was a change is tone, but the doctrine didn’t change on LGBTQ+ people, reproductive freedom or women priests. Nor was his track record on dealing with sexual abuse cases great.

This is great news - welcome Rebecca!

I feel similarly having watched lots of Mayday episodes - particularly hearing about the safety improvements introduced as a result of accidents.

When I saw the headline of that article I suspected it was going to annoy me. I was correct.

There seems to be some issue with the notice of motion. But I understand that Nikau is trying to fix that and he has certainly said that he will continue to oppose the sale whenever it comes to the council table.

Nikau has said that he will continue to vote against selling the airport shares. You make a good point about how tikanga can be weaponised though.

Labour might put up someone decent (I.e. not Paul Eagle) this time:

"Can I, straight cis man who has a long history of being a shitheel over identity politics, explain feminism and transness adequately? Oh definitely" - Danyl

Look, I am not trans or queer so I can't speak for anyone trans or queer but I am a feminist and I can tell you right the fuck now that gender essentialism based on genitals is not "TRADITIONAL FEMINISM" Danyl you fucking dork

Oh of course it’s Danyl! He really is the most overrated political writer in the country. A good writer who’s unaware of his own prejudices and ignorance is very dangerous.

ChildFund Water Run 6 Kiwi celebs racing in the ChildFund Water Run to raise awareness and money to bring safe, clean drinking water to children in the Pacific.

This is the cause Efeso was running for, raising money for fresh drinking water in the Pacific. I reckon sending some donations this way would be a wonderful way to do something with the sadness you're feeling.

Always best to get it checked if there’s a possibility. Speaking as someone who had a hand fracture that wasn’t diagnosed for two months!

To add - fundamentally, to steal a line, MPs represent people not acres. That is why electorates are based on population in most countries.

Large electorates are undesirable, but so giving people’s votes different weights depending on where they live. That is what would be undemocratic, in my view.

And overhangs are bad because they distort the proportionality of Parliament.

New Zealand used to have similar rule - the country quota - but it was abolished by Labour in the 1940s because it systemically favourited National.

17.01.2024 07:40 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You’re proposing a deviation from equal populations in electorates. The likelihood of it reducing the diversity of Parliament is a reason against it. It would make it difficult for National to bring people in on the list, so it’s not clear that it would be good for them unless there’s an overhang.

17.01.2024 07:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

National could end with few list MPs and potentially even an overhang.

17.01.2024 04:19 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I would prefer substantially increasing the size of Parliament so that there are more electorates to moving away from proportional populations. Rural, sparsely-populated areas tend to be whiter and more National-voting than the nation as a whole, so this could reduce diversity and create imbalances.

the coalition’s decision to overturn β€œre edwards”, the case establishing the test to obtain customary title under the marine and coastal areas act, is in effect the re-establishment of the foreshore and seabed act: overturning the case means extinguishing customary title to the foreshore and seabed
