Yes - there was a change is tone, but the doctrine didnβt change on LGBTQ+ people, reproductive freedom or women priests. Nor was his track record on dealing with sexual abuse cases great.

I feel similarly having watched lots of Mayday episodes - particularly hearing about the safety improvements introduced as a result of accidents.

There seems to be some issue with the notice of motion. But I understand that Nikau is trying to fix that and he has certainly said that he will continue to oppose the sale whenever it comes to the council table.

Nikau has said that he will continue to vote against selling the airport shares. You make a good point about how tikanga can be weaponised though.

Oh of course itβs Danyl! He really is the most overrated political writer in the country. A good writer whoβs unaware of his own prejudices and ignorance is very dangerous.

This is the cause Efeso was running for, raising money for fresh drinking water in the Pacific. I reckon sending some donations this way would be a wonderful way to do something with the sadness you're feeling.

To add - fundamentally, to steal a line, MPs represent people not acres. That is why electorates are based on population in most countries.
Large electorates are undesirable, but so giving peopleβs votes different weights depending on where they live. That is what would be undemocratic, in my view.
17.01.2024 23:28 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
And overhangs are bad because they distort the proportionality of Parliament.
New Zealand used to have similar rule - the country quota - but it was abolished by Labour in the 1940s because it systemically favourited National.
17.01.2024 07:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Youβre proposing a deviation from equal populations in electorates. The likelihood of it reducing the diversity of Parliament is a reason against it. It would make it difficult for National to bring people in on the list, so itβs not clear that it would be good for them unless thereβs an overhang.
17.01.2024 07:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
National could end with few list MPs and potentially even an overhang.
17.01.2024 04:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
I would prefer substantially increasing the size of Parliament so that there are more electorates to moving away from proportional populations. Rural, sparsely-populated areas tend to be whiter and more National-voting than the nation as a whole, so this could reduce diversity and create imbalances.
