Thanks for the great conversation at #HIMSS25 @chris-harrop.bsky.social!
Home after #HIMSS25! I’ve been reflecting on the key themes from the event:
🔑 Collaboration and relationships
🔑 Data quality emphasized by a need to fuel AI
🔑 #Interop is working and now we’re next era. We need more work around #digitalidentity and #directories
Looking forward to the next one!
Proof Digital Identity is a hot topic? Look at the overflow standing room only from this HL7/FAST/CARIN Alliance presentation on their digital identity pilot and their future plans.

Final note from General Nakasone?
We need to adapt, adopt, and advance.
This will drive innovation and quality in health care.
#HIMSS25
General Nakasone highlights the importance of preparing the next generation for cybersecurity. We’re facing a completely different future. “We have to be much more aggressive in investing in our future talent. I hope we look at this as our Sputnik moment” #HIMSS25
“I want policy writers who can code, and coders who understand policy. Wouldn’t it be great if clinicians could code, and coders understood what clinicians do?” - General Nakasone at #HIMSS25
“What I learned in Operation Warp Speed is let’s have radical partnerships to solve a problem that’s nearly unsolvable. That’s what we need to do for ransomware” - General Nakasone at #HIMSS25
General Nakasone is highlighting how Operation Warp Speed came to be, how HHS and DOD worked together and then reached out to NSA and Cyber Command to ensure the vaccine dev was protected from a cyber perspective.
Again, another example of collaboration being a key theme here at #HIMSS25
Thank you for the shoutout and including me!
General Nakasone highlights an article from @microsoft.com that shows the cyber resilience landscape of rural hospitals.
Spoiler alert: it’s not good.

Listening to General Paul M. Nakasone, the former Commander of US Cyber Command and former Director of the National Security Agency at #HIMSS25
Key thought so far: “AI is very helpful, but not a panacea”
Yesterday was an awesome “opening” day for #HIMSS25! Continuing #interop key themes:
⭐️ Collaboration and using existing infrastructure for new ideas
⭐️ Digital identity as the next frontier to better know and trust who we’re interacting with
⭐️ Expanding use of Directories enabling exchange
- The “it’s up to us” message continues with a twist from Aneesh Chopra to “it’s on us”. He evangelizes from the interop pulpit about how we need to self-organize to drive the future we want, and provides the evidence of “where the puck is going” related to chronic disease management #HIMSS25
- Lots of conversations around #DigitalIdentity and federation in healthcare. This is the next frontier to tackle, and soon
- Bad actors answer knowledge based identity verification at twice the success rate of the actual person in question. Bad actors are bad, but they aren’t stupid.
#HIMSS25 #Interop Preconference Forum takeaways:
- The micdrop moment when Angie Bass from Velatura answered why interop isn’t working everywhere. “No money, no mandate”
- We are fooling ourselves if we let standards get in the way of nationwide interop
Proof @healthcareittoday.com interviews are influential! In this #HIMSS25 #Interop Preconference Forum, Charlie Harp from @clinicalarchitecture.com highlights how @colinhung.bsky.social asked him a question last year during an interview that sparked an idea, which is what he’s sharing here today.
Great! Can’t wait to see you and catch up 🤗
Great session on the state of #interop and #HIEs moderated by the excellent @lisabari.bsky.social! #HIMSS25
Key takeaways:
- No one seems to be owning education here
- Patient consent needs to happen, we also need to acknowledge/solve the tradeoffs
- Trust and trust agreements are paramount
Are you going to be here at #HIMSS25 @hitreeset.bsky.social?
5 - Overall, the underlying message: keep going. Keep the patient and the mission centered. There’s more work to be done 💪
Seems like a good #TeamInterop message to me! #HIMSS25
4 - The AI we have today is the worst we will see in our lifetime. It’s only going to get better, but also will create more challenges to solve. #HIMSS25
3 - AI demands data, and it’s going to push #interop. Data needs to be better and cleaner to make AI work. #HIMSS25
2 - We’re never going to be done in #interoperability. There’s always going to be iteration and evolution, as there should be. #HIMSS25
Key takeaways:
1- Stop judging #interop progress based on standard adoption. Focus more on ubiquity of ability to exchange. #HIMSS25
Seems only fitting to kick off use of Bluesky listening to the one and only @healthapiguy.bsky.social at #HIMSS25!
