lots of lore i haven't rly explained but.. -when vern was younger, his father, erland, left their village to save a captured family member from garlemald -erland managed to get captured and brainwashed into being a spy for the empire. he was meant to spy on their original homeland since garlean troops had struggled infiltrating before. -erland infiltrated his village, intending to hide away in his home. his wife didn't notice anything wrong with him so she let him stay (there's some lore as to why erland couldn't stay in his village either, so that's why he's hiding away x_x) -village elders sense a disturbance near vern's household. they pinpoint it as erland. they cast his parents away to a secluded part of the village. -they identify erland as a garlean spy and execute him promptly (and vern's mother too for letting him back in the village and going against village rules) sorryy it's kind of a lot and jumbled but. YEA... previously, the empire had killed a few other of vern's family members and inflicted vern's grandfather with an unknown illness when he was captured in garlemald (although not their fault, still prob wouldn't have gotten that illness if it weren't for them)
