According to the Auditor General’s 2025 report, by March 31, 2025, Canada had committed US$ 935 million for the first 4 jets plus long-lead items for another 8 (for a total of 12) — of those, US$ 197 million had already been paid.

16 of 88 have been ordered.

Imo, the potential (not the actual purchase) to buy American fighter jets is leverage. We don't have a lot so making a quick decision not in favor of the US would result in the loss of this leverage. I imagine our government wants the deal with Saab but they also want this bargaining chip.
