I met the most beloved people in my life due to Squaresoft games. I am not exaggerating when I say they dramatically changed the course of my life before a lot of people reading this were even born. Square Enix has given me thousands of hours of joy and told stories that made me cry thousands of tears. I probably own more copies of Final Fantasy games alone (never mind books, soundtracks, figures, clothes, other merch, and other games) than the average person's physical media collection. I have been subscribed to Final Fantasy XIV since December 30, 2013. Even when I could have spent the $12.99 on food or prescriptions when I had no insurance, XIV meant too much to me. I don't think Doc ever unsubbed either, which means we have spent a cringe-inducing $3,741 on our XIV subs alone.

During Dawntrail, I realized just how attached I'd become to my weeaboo-ass catgirl avatar in XIV. Even though I don't RP my Warrior of Light, even though it's just a cartoon video game character, it felt like we'd been through some really painful stuff side by side over 11 years. I can't do it anymore. I've given them too many passes, telling myself I would only support XIV because Yoshi-P forced them to treat the developers at Creative Business Unit 3 fairly, and because of Soken -- and that was a lie; I hypocritically continued to buy Nier games, Nier merch, and yet more Distant Worlds concert tickets. I'm cancelling my plans for FanFest. I'm cancelling a merch preorder. I'm cancelling my FF XIV subscription after 11 years and 311 days. I hadn't bought FF7: Rebirth yet and I just can't now.

Bragging about how 70% of its QA work would be "done by AI" and firing dozens, if not hundreds of people (and that's probably just the beginning) is unconscionable. I can't keep begging people to stop giving Acti-Blizz and EA money while continuing to fund SE's absolute BS corporate greed. It's stupid but I feel like I'm cutting off a beloved but morally irredeemable family member.

Square Enix announced mass layoffs but also that they're going all in on AI. In 2 years they plan for "70% of QA and debugging tasks in game dev" to be done by AI.

25 years of SE obsession, thousands of dollars, and 11 years 311 days of two FF XIV subs. It has to stop here. No more SE anything. 😟
