Donald Lawrence has said that the Black Church is one of the world’s great conservatories of music. I’m afraid we’re losing this to passive participation and professional musicians. We no longer grow and encourage that talent, earning their chops singing week after week in front of a live audience.

During the marathon campaign rally that Trump called his SOTU speech, he "unveiled" a proposal for the federal government to provide matching contributions of up to $1,000 per year to the retirement accounts of low-wage earners.

It's a great idea. It is also already a law signed by Biden in 2022.

I love that the one Trump policy from #SOTU that people don't hate is actually a Biden policy.

So they’re going to cripple healthcare for the poor in Minnesota to make an example of the state. The warning is “don’t resist.”

Faculty have essentially two choices: (1) learn in painstaking detail how resources flow through your institution and how budgets work or (2) complain as you are cut to the bone and then broken. You’d be shocked at how many administrators and faculty do not understand their budget model.

Budget models are not neutral admin objects. I tell everyone that the flow of resources reflects your institutional priorities. Changes in budget models are changes in institutional priorities. For example, modeling majors at the college level versus department level is a (deliberate) choice.

It’s fascinating to see demands for dignity as the only socially acceptable response Black people should have to dehumanization.
