This is where INTELLIGENT fits in. The project focuses on open, interoperable tools for peer-to-peer energy and flexibility trading, designed to work with real assets, real users and real network constraints.
At the same time, some hype deserves scrutiny. Blockchain alone does not solve market design. AI alone does not guarantee better decisions. Without solid interoperability, governance and grid integration, advanced technologies risk remaining just cosmetic.
• Regulatory evolution is continuing across Europe, with frameworks emerging to integrate local markets and grid tariffs.
• Digitalisation and automation are transforming energy transactions. Technologies such as blockchain, AI-driven optimisation and advanced market mechanisms are enabling scalable peer-to-peer trading that could co-exist with grid operations.
• Decentralisation and decentralised trading are fully becoming parts of electricity markets, as prosumers and community energy schemes expand beyond passive consumption into active energy exchange models.
This creates a growing contradiction:
Local energy sharing is expected to scale, yet the digital foundations needed for scale are often missing.
Several global trends are shaping what comes next for industry players:
On one hand, decentralisation is accelerating. Energy communities and flexibility services are expanding, and regulators are opening space for local markets. On the other hand, much of today’s industry infrastructure is still built around centralised trading models and proprietary systems.

Local energy sharing is moving closer to the mainstream, but the transition is not as smooth as some headlines suggest.
Closing the interoperability gap is one of the key steps towards making peer-to-peer energy trading work in practice. It is a prerequisite for scaling up local energy sharing across Europe.

INTELLIGENT connects local energy assets, market mechanisms and grid services without vendor lock-in by relying on open standards and decentralised identity and messaging frameworks.
INTELLIGENT addresses this challenge directly ⚡
The project is building an interoperable infrastructure that allows different assets, platforms and actors to exchange data securely and transparently.
This interoperability gap limits what local energy markets can really do. Without secure and standardised data exchange, peer-to-peer trading stays simplistic, flexibility services are hard to unlock and grid operators cannot reliably interact with community-level markets.
Smart meters, PV systems, batteries, EV chargers, community platforms and grid operator tools often operate in parallel, using different data models, protocols and access rules. As a result, energy sharing remains fragmented, difficult to scale and heavily dependent on bespoke integrations.

Local energy markets are growing fast, but many of them still struggle with the same underlying problem: systems do not talk to each other.
In 2026, INTELLIGENT will continue contributing to the shift from ambition to implementation.

Many existing solutions still rely on fixed pricing or central intermediaries. They show intent, but not yet the full potential of peer-to-peer energy sharing.
This is where INTELLIGENT comes in 🔌
Distribution grids are under growing pressure to integrate renewables, flexibility and active consumers. At the same time, citizens are asking for real choice in how energy is produced and shared.

Across Europe, 2026 might prove to be a key moment for local energy sharing.
EU electricity market reforms are moving from policy into national implementation. Energy communities are becoming permanent actors rather than pilot cases.
