Russia controls a significant portion of the Arctic and has militarized it in recent years. NATO, China and India have worked to increase their presence in the North, reigniting realist thinkers.

4/ As security concerns have increased, we have seen a return to realist lenses being applied to the Arctic.

3/ The Cold War was a period with intense focus and competition in the Arctic, with security cooperation between Canada and the US focusing extensively on the region.

The '90s saw it transform into a space for cooperation and away from realism.
