Experience: I heard back about a job application 48 years later — The Guardian I remembered anxiously waiting for a reply, the disappointment when it never came – and all the adventures I went on after that letdown

What an incredible story of resilience and pushing against gendered work barriers.

Ghosting, ghost jobs and bots: Candidates reveal their… | Greenhouse Learn more about the new Greenhouse 2024 State of Job Hunting report, including common missed opportunities and candidates’ top concerns.

Glad to see the issue of ghosting candidates has been highlighted by this new report. My recently published research (doi.org/10.1177/0950...) demonstrates how unemployed people feel ignored and stigmatised by the lack of feedback they receive via frequent auto-rejection of their job applications.

Most candidates face discriminatory interview questions amid rising UK job market competition, study reveals Experts say ‘soul crushing’ employment landscape demands HR teams prioritise ‘fairness, transparency and respect’ in recruitment

It's unfortunately unsurprising that candidates are still facing bias in recruitment. In recognition of this, myself and @emmathirkell.bsky.social developed a teaching approach to support HR students identify bias at each stage of recruitment and selection.

Absolutely! It’s interesting how it’s portrayed when they’re expecting an increase in temp roles which could actually help Jobcentre clients.

I just got a contract to write a book about the “frontline” of unemployment so I’m hyper aware of the current discourse

Have a great week!

I hope people look at the detail of this report rather than the unemployment “threat” inherent in the headline and use of the Jobcentre pic.

The government’s major employment support reforms could make a major difference to workers in their 50s and 60s…if they really want it to The government recently published proposals to reform employment, health and skills support to tackle economic inactivity and support people into good work in the form of its Get Britain Working Again...

The Centre for Better Ageing encourages the government to evaluate “all-age” unemployment schemes that have much lower outcomes levels for age 50+ compared to younger people
