Watch out for the next generation of tropical ecologists and #insect taxonomists. Amazonian #fieldwork already finished in two regions, moving our lab to the next region tomorrow! A joint effort to monitor insect biodiversity changes across the tropics.

An overwhelming majority of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is unauthorized (illegal).

A data-driven report from August/2023 to July/2024, cross-referencing deforestation with clearing permits, confirms this heartbreaking reality. Read more below ⬇️

The taxonomic biases in biodiversity data are growing over time. The amount of data we are collecting is growing, but the biases get bigger. We need to make a conscious effort to study the understudied!

The climate and biodiversity crises are entwined, but we risk pitting one against the other In our race to cool the planet, we must not compromise the ecosystems on which we depend.

There are many ways in which the potential marriage of the goals tackling climate change and restoring biodiversity is a good thing. But also real dangers of an abusive relationship if biodiversity is subordinated to an overpowering drive for carbon sequestration and biofuels.

A wasp nest behind a leaf. The nest is built as a very thin layer in the back of the leaf, occupying the center of the leaf while leaving 1-2 cm borders of leaf. The back of the leaf is green, while the nest has a mix of green and light brown straps that gives the look of a dry leaf. There is an opening in the bottom of the nest, where 4 to five time wasps are positioned. Other wasps are present at the borders of the leaf, around the nest. There is some signs of herbivore on the leaf, and the nest follows the shape of the herbivore marks.

The little things we find doing #fieldwork in the #AmazonForest. Unsure about the wasp species, but amazed with the nest structure.
