A contextualized ecological theory Nature Reviews Biodiversity - A contextualized ecological theory

I had the opportunity to write for
@natrevbiodiv.bsky.social
about a paper I found particularly interesting and its implications for ecological theory.

These journal club articles are a great way for ECR to engage with the broader community.

Manual Labelling Artificially Inflates Deep Learning-Based Segmentation Performance on Closed Canopy: Validation Using TLS Monitoring forest dynamics at an individual tree scale is essential for accurately assessing ecosystem responses to climate change, yet traditional methods relying on field-based forest inventories ar...

There's a lot of interest in #deeplearning for tree crown segmentation from imagery, but most methods are tested in manual annotations, checked visually.

How well do these perform on rigourously ground-truthed data? Our new preprint, by Matt Allen finds...not so well.🧡

Two really important papers for anyone interested in causal inference in ecology came out recently in Ecology Letters. 1st up (by @lauradee.bsky.social & @katherinesiegel.bsky.social) is this over-view paper. Really useful for both experts and beginners.

Hardly new info, but BSky should know:

Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply.
Thank you, little guardian molluscs.

New paper: Forest dynamics where typhoon winds blow.

In Hong Kong, wind exposed forests are shorter and more uniform. Damage from Mangkhut, the strongest typhoon in 40 years, was higher in tall forests and plantations.
