Education research has yet to grapple with its roots in eugenics. Eugenicists argued that certain races were inferior. This was reframed as some cultures being inferior and more recently as different but the end result is still the same—racialized ways of knowing are framed as a barrier to learning.

Teaching how to make #hearing assessments more child-friendly for children affected by language disorders. Methods from augmentative and alternative communication #AAC , such as using #Metacom symbols, can significantly support children's understanding of the examination process #devlangdis

In my opinion, inclusion and equity aren’t opposites.
In my opinion, treating all children the same, despite differing needs, is unfair.
Hence, individualized logopedic/SLT support enables true inclusion.
And: inclusion mustn’t be used as an excuse for staff cuts at schools.

These legal, structural, and ideological barriers make it difficult for logopedists/SLTs to play a meaningful role in schools. However, I remain optimistic that #DLD #awareness and #advocacy can drive change, highlighting the long-term benefits of communicative support for academic success. (4/4)

Unfortunately, these inclusion policies coincided w staffing reductions in specialized logopedic expertise. As a result children’s access to targeted therapies has been further restricted in some states. „Inclusion is not removing children from their classrooms for individualized therapy“ (3/4)

Another challenge arises from Germany’s implementation of the UN’s #inclusion mandate. Many special education schools, which once offered critical support for children with speech and language needs, have been closed to favor fully inclusive classrooms. (2/4)

Thank you for your thoughtful question! One major hurdle is legal: In Germany, logopedists/SLTs can only provide therapeutic services with a physician’s prescription. This restriction prohibits them from working directly in schools, as schools are not classified as health settings. (1/4)

However, SLTs should be allowed to become an integral part of schools to ensure successful inclusion in the education system, lowering long waiting times, and have direct access without unnecessary detours.

Since there’re good examples from other countries we appreciate your support to achieve this

We were warmly welcomed by the President of the Parliament. Our visit was a follow-up to the symposium of Children‘s Language Health held at the HSB City University Bremen on 27 Sep.

Different to the US, UK, Saitzerland and EU countries, SLTs are not allowed to provide services at schools YET …

I would like to express my gratitude for the invitation to the Bremen state parliament! Today, some of my students, research associates and I followed the invitation of the spokesperson for children and families, incl a discussion with MPs on child language health and need for SLTs in schools 🧵

Your baby begins to understand the language you use even before they can replicate it.

That’s because language learning occurs along two interconnected pathways.
