“What did they have that eludes their lesser-known heirs today? The answer is that Kissinger & Brzezinski were immigrants. Newcomers often value America’s freedoms more than its native-born and are statistically far likelier to start companies, win Nobel Prizes & launch schools of thought.”
~Ed Luce

Tonight, a Democratic candidate became the first Democrat to win the county in a federal election race since 1992. A simply stunning result. Trump won FL-1 by 37 points. Republicans have easily routed Democrats in Pensacola’s Escambia County for over 30 years. Not tonight.

Amy Coney Barrett Isn’t What the Conservative Legal Movement Expected The Supreme Court’s second-newest justice is proving herself to be a non-hack—to the increasing consternation of MAGA.

Amy Coney Barrett's writings on the court give the impression of a law professor turned judge who is often exasperated by her fellow conservatives’ shoddy reasoning and corner-cutting.

“There is nothing in the Constitution that requires that the members of the coequal elected branch of government be constrained from offering even the slightest hint of critical advice when they see the President pouring gasoline on our national security and dancing around it with a lighted match.”

“Our peaceful trading partners are not our enemies. They are our allies. We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security and the entire free world. All while cynically waving the American flag.” ~Reagan 11.6.88

US Debt Faces Record as Trump and GOP Plan Tax Cuts The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that annual deficits will top $21 trillion over the next decade.

The US has recklessly run up over $30 trillion in debt since 2001. When I left Congress that year, we had 4 consecutive years of balanced budgets and a surplus of $155 Billion. Today? A $36 Trillion debt and $20T more over the next decade. Catastrophic.

Presidential Odd Couple: After a Tough Race, Carter and Ford Became Friends Jimmy Carter and Gerald R. Ford faced off in 1976 in a bitter campaign but later bonded as few presidents have — and made a pact to speak at each other’s funerals.

The unlikely bond between Jimmy Carter and Jerry Ford is a rare story in the history of the American presidency and all the more unimaginable in today’s polarized environment, but it transcended politics and partisanship. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/08/u...

November brought a 6% shift nationally towards Trump. But in Wisconsin, it was only 1.5%.

At the same time, we reelected Tammy Baldwin to the Senate and flipped 14 state legislative seats.

Organizing and communicating year-round matters. We can do this in every state and territory.

Kash Patel once said he would 'come after' journalists. It now hangs over his FBI candidacy. Trump's pick for FBI director has vowed to "come after" the media. But he also later emphasized to NBC News that his comments only apply if people "broke the law."

Kash Patel said he'd “come after” journalists in a podcast last year.

Now that he's in the running to lead the FBI, the comment is troubling both sides of the aisle and may become a central point of contention if he comes up for Senate confirmation.

Trump’s Senate Backers Must Tell Him to Dump Kash Patel and Pete Hegseth The consequences for the GOP of rubber stamping the worst of Trump’s nominees will be almost as bad for them as it would be for the rest of the country.

Most of Trump's nominees are perfectly normal & deserve confirmation. But some--Hegseth, Gabbard, Patel, RFK, Jr., etc.--are not only dangerous, they'll be bad news for Trump & the GOP. Trump supporters need to stop them. Dems need to do what they can to help.

Wisconsin Democratic Chair Says He Is the One to Revive a Distressed Party Ben Wikler, who has led the Wisconsin Democratic Party since 2019, announced a bid to be national party chair with a platform to “unite, fight, win.”

This precisely: “We have to be going to places where voters are hearing only about Democrats from Republicans. If voters hear about Democrats only from Republicans than Democrats are going to lose.” @benwikler.bsky.social

8. What I have come to realize, however, is that the fight against the far right is secondary to the fight to strengthen liberal democracy. These are related but fundamentally not the same struggles.
