Few if any experts know more about the deliberate use of starvation as a war crime than Alex de Waal. If he says it's happening, it's so.

The inauguration of chaos In a nod to the broad-brush tradition of western foreign correspondents, Patrick Gathara reports on the inauguration of Donald Trump.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ’s P Gathara:

β€œSeptuagenarian strongman Donald Trump once again took the oath of office, in a ceremony witnessed by a small group of aging elite members of the oligarchy that has ruled the United States for decades. Shortly after the traditional oath rituals, Trump declared expansionist plans”

Queens College just forced chairs to fire 26 of my colleagues, two weeks before the semester starts. They've lost health insurance and income, we've lost 79 sections and over 1600 students have lost their classes. Please help us protest! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Ein sehr intelligentes Interview mit Masha Gessen ΓΌber die VorgΓ€nge in Deutschland. Sie beschreibt das, was sie gerade erlebt, als eine Art "kontrolliertes Experiment". Aber lest selbst.

Opinion | We Are No Strangers to Human Suffering, but We’ve Seen Nothing Like the Siege of Gaza Global leaders and especially the U.S. government must understand we cannot save lives in Gaza under these conditions.

But as the leaders of some of the world’s largest global humanitarian organizations, we have seen nothing like the siege of Gaza

What is missing from the German debate over #Gaza? With Adam Tooze, Amia Srinivasan, Samuel Moyn,
Nancy Fraser, Chandra Talpade Mohanty, we responded to the Habermas letter.

"Solidarity means that the principle of human dignity must apply to all people."

The Netherlands underestimated the far right – and Geert Wilders’ victory is the result | Cas Mu... Media complacency and outgoing PM Mark Rutte’s decision to campaign on immigration have created a political earthquake, says Cas Mudde of the University of Georgia

Cas Mudde on NL election w/important lession also for German politics: "... it has happened over and over again... If you make...elections about...issues of the far right, notably the 'problem' of immigration, the far right wins." Unfortunately, parties in DE seem to be making the same mistake.

Interesting. I think New Yorkers should try having a mayor who is good instead, but I understand that's not part of their culture.

Doctors Without Borders has been present in a lot of horrific conflict zones, & I'm wondering how what you're dealing with now is similar or different from other places you have experienced?

It's different. And yes, I have worked in conflict zones & they're always very nasty. But this is a particularly brutal thing because of the huge number of civilian casualties. And they can't escape it. They can't move. They're told to displace down south. But are we talking about just reducing the area from forty-five kilometres to twenty kilometres in length and trying to put two million people in there, which is ... It's just an extraordinary situation. And no, I haven't seen it.

They haven't stopped bombing. They're still bombing. They've got troops in there with tanks. And it's just consistent. It's well documented. We are seeing it all over the world in all the newspapers and television. So it's like people know exactly what's happening. And yet it doesn't stop. I haven't seen that before.

There is just no getting around this bit from the latest Chotiner interview. Doctors Without Borders has never seen this before: the number of civilian casualties, the inescapability of death, the fact that everyone knows what is happening BUT IT DOESN'T STOP.
