Mathematics Portfolios for Competencies As mathematics educators, we focus a lot of time and energy on mathematical content. Our students can optimize surface area, complete the square, and find intersections of functions. But, what about m...

My colleague and I did a cool thing! Check it out:

Overwhelmingly my class chose not brush your hair. 2 of 21 disagreed and said not brush teeth

I like the topological approach, so yes it is flat even when rolled up.

Alberta teachers and students deserve better - sending support from BC!

What are some values for x that aren’t solutions?

I am hoping this reveals something about the direction of their number line, positive on the left ?

Or probability?

Because they use the word percent (pct) I would say they communicated incorrectly.

BC has a grade 11 math history course!!

Have any BC math educators on here taught this course? If so, what was your experience?

Here's the details on the weighting. Those that pay the most, get 6 entries (versus one for the free membership). Oh, and those entries will have much better odds than the free one.

Oh but don't worry, those richest that are able to pay up for the most expensive tier will also get a tax receipt for $4225, so they'll probably only be out of pocket $3000 or so, depending on the province they pay taxes on. In case you were worried about their bottom line.

@canadasocceren.bsky.social deciding to weight the World Cup ticket lottery based on membership fees is yet another example that they don't seem to care about growing soccer across this country. How is the average fan supposed to compete with the richest who can afford $5000?

Lovely! Part of my wondering has led me to the idea of assessing mathematical creativity somehow. Would you ask Ss to do this in an assessment?

The commutative property teaches us that it doesn’t matter who is first, if we work together we achieve greater things.

I see it through problem solving (but a lot of problem solving is not all that creative) and … that’s about it. I do a Desmos project I love, but I see it as creativity using mathematics, not mathematically creativity.

I’ve been thinking a lot about mathematical creativity recently. How do you approach this in your classroom? Where do you see it? #MTBoS #iteachmath

I’ll call it the regularity index, and it will be the decimal representation of the shortest side divided by longest side.

Good to know! I know my students and their post secondary counsellors all feel that calculus is essential for business and science programs as well. A lot of that is legacy I am sure

This! In my area there are so many great courses available at the grade 12 level, including geometry, statistics, and even history of mathematics. Sadly, university programs emphasize Calculus so Ss won’t choose these. Yet for many they would be more interesting and relevant #MTBoS

A graph showing maths levels of boys and girls over three time periods. Although their level start at similar scores, by the final time period, there is a significant gap between boys and girls with boys scoring higher. The scores are broken into different types of schooling, include private and several public types, and the effect is similar across all school types.

This graph jumped out at me immediately - the effect is independent of school type #MTBoS

This looks interesting, and if anybody has a subscription and can post screenshots, that'd be great.

Has anyone out there used Knowledge Forum for learning portfolios before? I found it in an interesting article, but it doesn't seem to exist online anymore.

Also, if you have recommendations for online portfolio software let me know - thanks!

Zoom also has a decent whiteboard - I’m not sure how much you can get for free, and I think you lose it after the meeting is over?
