Yeah they really cut back on graduate student admission where they are stipend based,...but they took on a lot of paid masters degrees and professional students in our department though. Sadly I think grad schools going to become pay to play.

A professor from NYU Lagone was harrasing me on instagram under an anonymous account and it took me all of 20 minutes to find out who he was and report him to his departments.

I don’t venture outside the feminist/liberal/science circle, really curate my feed, so I don’t get many negative comments. I’m not hunting down Maga posts and commenting but still a few trickle in completely unprompted

Dear trolls: I will make a cutting remark then block you. I will look up your profile. I am a tech and data science master.

I have filed sexual harassment complaints against people. Stay in your lane.

I’m an NIH whistleblower. The scientific community cannot afford to avoid politics “Scientists are often encouraged to avoid politics. But this advice is outdated, if it was ever correct in the first place,” writes Jenna Norton, NIH whistleblower.

Everybody should know who @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social is.
In this day and age it is more risky to keep your head down than to be the whistleblower that we needs.

Right now, being called "a radical leftist" is a badge of honor. And imperative.

Read her story here.

I had to shift to public health/medical research because of lack of funding for environmental research in the US.

As someone who started in environmental research, yeah the politicization over environmental regulations & #climatechange was the 1st step to mass science distrust. #climatecrisis #globalwarming #feministscience #academicSKy #science

I know, makes me mad.

It staggers me how fast the vast majority of people - including medical professionals - have normalised infection with a virus that can cause cognitive dysfunction / anosmia. SARS-2 is definitively not 'just another respiratory virus', yet society is just shoehorning it in there.

A new history of Iraq Hurriedly produced textbooks will give Iraqi children an incomplete version of their past, says Christina Asquith.

Did you know that the US revised millions of textbooks for Iraq's 5.5 million schoolchildren in 2003 to enforce US propaganda?

The Imperial University How the U.S. used education to increase global power & justify imperialism

New Post - As a US citizen I am horrified & disgusted by my country’s current bombing of Iran. Here is a history of how the US used higher education to establish global influence in the 20th century. #academicchatter #highereducation #feministscience

Women are often held to higher standards in #academicwriting and publication. The same paper submitted under male names tend to get published over the same paper with a female name.

I have extremely high-quality professional figures. Advanced methods. Develop my own code and post it online. Flawless, beautiful writing. Still, I AM NEVER GOOD ENOUGH. I will get 14 pages of reviewer comments nitpicking methods, references, misplaced comments, that v. which!

I get ridiculed for having a 2005 reference in a paper but my peers can have incomplete sentences, typos, sloppy figures, poorly defined methods and still pass their dissertation/get published. What is wrong with #academicpublishing? #writingcommunity #aislop #academicchatter #postdoclife

You need to check out reddits r/AskTeachers, r/Teachers threads--the kids literally cannot distinguish between reality anad the computer, they make moaning noises, animal sounds, talk baby talk, imitate the sounds in the videos they see.

I do not have a solution for this. I’m in a unique position since I can build my own AI models and analyze data—and check, test, ect. My research without this would be impossible without AI. however, Chatgpt and LLMs don’t perform well on the research I do.

We are ill-equipped to handle this deluge of AI in teaching, and see where it hurts students cognitively the most and develop curriculum and pedagogy around it. Academia both refused to acknowledge tech-advances but also praised STEM fields and slowly devalued the huminites over 2 decades.

Using spellcheck, laptops or calculators was treated as a moral failing. That's why so many of us older folks are so anti-AI, we see it as cheating since we were conditioned to. Nobody did the hard work of setting guidelines, boundaries, or instructing us on these tools.

Academia was SO paranoid about us cheating-banned calculators in calc class and made us handwrite CS exams in the 2010s (even us take off our shoes lest we slip in notes) & did little to examine cultivating creativity, valuing humanities in a tech driven world and are now scrambling #academichatter

This is what happens though--they were SO paranoid about us cheating in school and banned calculators in calc class and made us handwrite CS exams in the 2010s, and did little to examine how tech actually impacts cognitive function and now are overwhelmed.
