πŸŒ„ If you're out and about in Charnwood Forest, please take care not to damage the geological outcrops.

❀️ Our Geopark contains internationally important rocks and fossils - its up to all of us to look after them.

We are very fortunate to have some great @charnwoodforest.bsky.social walks around Coalville, and today was no exception when I caught the early morning bus to Markfield, walked to the Altar Stones, then over the road to Hill Hole Quarry, next stop Billa Barra and then over Bardon Hill and home

Out for an early morning 6.5 mile walk around the western part of @charnwoodforest.bsky.social taking in Warren Hills, then to the abbey and back home via Holly Hayes Wood.
Plenty of interesting rock outcrops to investigate.

A very wet but pleasant walk around Holly Hayes Wood in the @charnwoodforest.bsky.social this morning.
After 8 hours of non stop heavy rain the going was a bit slippery but it was good to see the stream running so high

πŸŒ„ Charnwood Forest has long been celebrated for its fantastic views.

πŸ“˜ In 1790, John Throsby wrote of the summit at Hill Hole in Markfield: "...England produceth not another where the mind of man, fixed on futurity, might exercise itself with more profit."

🌍 Did you know, when the sedimentary rocks of Beacon Hill were laid down - 565 million years ago - Charnwood Forest would have been at the bottom of the sea.

Back then our region was far from where it is now, with a latitude of around 60Β° south of the equator!

πŸ’§ Thornton Reservoir, in the south west of the Geopark, was constructed in 1854 to supply drinking water to the growing communities of Leicestershire.

🚢 Today it is a peaceful place to explore the trails around the water's edge.

The perfect morning for a walk over Warren Hills, one of the gems of the @charnwoodforest.bsky.social
Great views north over Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire and views south over Leicestershire and Warwickshire.
Also some wonderful ever changing landscape colours.
