Animal welfare groups call for end to live reindeer displays at festive events
An open letter has been sent to hundreds of event organisers.
There are better ways to have fun in the run up to Christmas, without causing these beautiful gentle creatures psychological stress and physical fatigue. It's not too late for event organisers to do the right thing. β€οΈπ¦ news.stv.tv/scotland/ani...

A cycle path with a blue bike. The way ahead is blocked by orange barriers. To the side is a sign showing it is a cycle route.
Orange plastic barriers with ELC stamped on them. Behind them is a pile of broken tarmac and stones.
It would appear @eastlothiancouncil.bsky.social think the National Cycle Network in Musselburgh is an appropriate place to dump rubble. How odd. @spokes.org.uk @edi.bike @edcriticalmass.bsky.social @shona-mcintosh.bsky.social

A rippling stretch of water with over a dozen geese with orange beaks
In the distance, Arthur's Seat, while in the foreground is a pebbly shore with some geese
A calm pond containing dozens of lapwing
A small brown bird with a long curved beak, standing on grass with water behind
Remembered to take my "bins" on my way past Musselburgh lagoons today. Lots to see. Hundreds of lapwing, greylag geese and oystercatchers. Also a curlew or two, a heron, a swan, and in the distance, apparently, a ruff!

Metal fencing, behind which is a building site and a red sign with white lettering: Footpath Closed, No Public Access, Please Use Alternative Route
Looking down a steep flight of stone steps
I don't know who signed off the stopping up order for the cycle path between Edinburgh Park and Hermiston Gait but their idea of an 'alternative route' leaves a lot to be desired! @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social @spokes.org.uk @edi.bike #EdTravCyc

Footpath blocked with traffic cones and striped tape and a sign saying Footpath Closed. Off to one side is another sign giving details of the closure.
π³Watch out if you like a cycle along Fisherrow Links in Musselburgh - the path from the Electric Bridge to the pumping station, past the skate ramp is closed to bikes due to Scottish Water works until mid-Dec. Easy alternative via New St. On foot, you can still get through. @spokes.org.uk

Industry pushing back because it fears consumers knowing the reality. When a pig is being killed, CO2 painfully dissolves the membranes around its eyes, nose and mouth, then they experience breathlessness, causing them to gulp and panic. It's no way to treat another sentient being. β€οΈπ·

A wonderful piece. We were in Pere Lachaise just last week. I wondered about the tomb with the camera sculpture! Alain Bashung's grave nearby, covered in kisses, was quite striking. I enjoyed (if that is appropriate) Michel Legrand's grave, all swirls like the windmills of your mind...

I appreciate "UK" is handy shorthand but of course we've had a ban on fracking in Scotland for some years. Both licensing and planning policy are devolved.

A box of dead, plucked gannets
This is so sad to see.
The Sula Sgeir guga hunt has happened.
Up to 500 juvenile gannets bashed in the head, because "tradition".
Inhumane and totally unnecessary in today's society.

Excuse me if I prefer to follow the advice of Scotland's chief nutritionist, who told parliament last week: "The reality is that our diets are so poor that meat has an elevated status. If we ate a healthy, balanced diet, we would not really need to have any meat within that." ππ
