I spent the last 2 weeks in the Netherlands, at the Leiden Summer School in Languages and Linguistics. I had 4 courses in Chechen, Indigenous languages of North America, Tibeto-Burman languages of China, and documentation of storytelling & oral traditions.

Yes, you said it correctly, it's mostly a feature of orthography. Most Catalan varieties have now lost the distinction with <l> orally.
