Cardiogenic pulmonary edema occurs when the pressure inside the capillaries exceeds the vessel threshold. The fluid extravasates out of the vessels into the interstitial space and then into the alveoli. The fluid makes the interlobular septa swell and become irregular.

Multiple studies in different settings have shown that a DVT can be diagnosed at the bedside with similar accuracy to that of a radiologist doing a formal study. For example, a study of hospitalists found that 3-point compression study was 100% sensitive and 95% specific for diagnosing a DVT.
