New @nber.org WP out from Bocar Ba today. I edited several rounds on this paper and remain so impressed that while lots of economists have frozen or relabeled their research agendas related to racial equity, Bocar has held steady. He's brave and I'm proud to be his editor www.nber.org/papers/w34933

Closeup of almost-spent cherry blossoms covered in snow. Close up of newly-blooming magnolia blossom coated in snow.

Seattle trees are so confused this winter. (Context: both of these are blooming way earlier than usual and are now coated in snow.)

Picture of a suburban backyard with trees, lawn furniture and a trampoline all covered in a light dusting of snow.

First snow of the winter in Seattle today! No snow day yet, but it’s still snowing.

This demography thread is such a wealth of interesting and useful data.

No worries. I hope it’s real, since I do a lot of this type of research and never know where to publish it. It’s too Econ-y for public health journals but to much of a “case study” for many Econ-adjacent journals.

I talked to dozens of experts in government, academia, cybersecurity, and industry about exactly this scenario last year and not only did not one of them think I was being alarmist, many brought it up unprompted and many said there was zero chance it hadn’t already happened

Really? So they’re saying my entire career is a joke?? (Just kidding, but I’m pretty sure it’s real since they have sent out a few emails about it.)

Headline "House budget proposal would cut physical, occupational, and speech therapies from Apple Health (Medicaid) for all adults," followed by the quote, "Cutting therapies from Apple Health (Medicaid) would harm many, cost more in the long run, and help no one." against a background image of an adult with a leg brace holding onto guardrails as they move toward a medical professional

#WALeg House budget proposal would cut coverage for physical, occupational, and speech therapies for all adults enrolled in Apple Health (Medicaid). The final budget isn't yet decided, but session ends March 12. NoHLA teamed up with partners to sound the alarm. Read more: tinyurl.com/save-therapies

Republicans are using kids as a smokescreen for what Big Tech lobbyists want: a national surveillance program to harvest our data with zero protections for people and their privacy.

We must fight this dangerous expansion of surveillance technology.

Presumably. Makes me think those initiatives to teach faculty how to write op-eds have gone off the rails a bit.

Super not chill that my online mom chat is all about the possibility of our sons being drafted right now.

I think I’m old enough for my childhood to qualify as one generation ago, and both of my parents worked (my mom was the breadwinner) and I think all of my friends’ moms worked, even if they were in part time jobs. Also, our vacations were driving in the car to stay in a hotel for three days.

LOL and WTF? Maybe our need to say any dumbass thing we possibly can to get attention on the internet is what is destroying society, and not *ordering off of a menu* 😡.

Multiple bar charts comparing milks across a number of environmental metrics: land use, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and eutrophication (the pollution of ecosystems with excess nutrients). These are compared per liter of milk.

Cow’s milk has significantly higher impacts than the plant-based alternatives across all metrics. It causes around three times as much greenhouse gas emissions; uses around ten times as much land; two to twenty times as much freshwater; and creates much higher levels of eutrophication.

The data source is based on a meta-analysis (by Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek, 2018) of food system impact studies across the supply chain, which includes land use change, on-farm production, processing, transport, and packaging. The chart is licensed CC BY to Our World in Data

A growing number of people are interested in switching to plant-based alternatives to dairy. But are they better for the environment, and which is best?

Lonny Fritzler installs paneling on a future therapeutic foster home for kids whose parents need addiction treatment elsewhere. He says he had to leave his hometown of Lodge Grass to recover from his own addiction to meth. Illustration by Oona Zenda of a man having to weigh prioritizing either his job or access to health care with a lawmaker in the background. Hundreds of people join a protest in downtown Hamilton, Montana, in April supporting the work of federal employees as President Donald Trump oversees efforts to restructure the nation’s government.

Hi — new to BlueSky! I’m a journalist covering how health policy and systems impact people. Lately I’ve reported on federal cuts hitting a rural bioscience hub, a town recovering from meth, and a man who said he had to break Medicaid rules.

Based in Montana, I write for both 📰 and 📻

Important to remember how much Democrats continued to rely on this guy AFTER he said that women were underrepresented in science due to innate mathematical inability. Harvard left him to continue to lead students after saying this.
