Excited to be presenting my work at #ASBMB26 on how glucose metabolism interacts with mTor signaling in #Drosophila in the Integrated Metabolism session on March 9 at 2.50 pm in the Cherry Blossom room.
It's my first time attending #ASBMB and we are having a wonderful time here in DC ☺️
Lovely seeing you today, Shefali! It was wonderful reconnecting! :)
Congratulations Syed! @neuroseq.bsky.social Must have been an excellent talk!
The best keynote talks make you wish you studied the question the speaker is presenting. In that respect, this amazing talk by Amita Sehgal (UPenn) on how and why flies sleep (which is likely the same reason we do) is just so amazing it’s hard to describe. Mind is truly blown. #Dros26
Revised version of my PhD manuscript!! We extend cell type specificity of circadian peroxisomal import in glial cells by now mechanistically overexpressing Pex5 which rescues Per import phenotype & how Pex5 deletion cause sleep defects in cortex glia & lipid defects globally in glia & neurons.
Face of a fruit fly that helped #HHMIInvestigator Amita Sehgal and team uncover how sleep acts as a critical "cellular housekeeper," keeping our neurons healthy (and so much more) — findings that could drive a better understanding of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s: bit.ly/3ZKNFnK.
Congratulations, Matt!
www.nature.com/articles/s41... Congratulations to Bumsik & Amita! Brilliant work
After 50 years in science, former #HHMIInvestigator David Clapham’s advice is simple: “You have to see problem-solving as fun.” From training with Nobel laureates to deepening our understanding of ion channels & leading at HHMI, he retires with a lasting legacy: hhmi.news/3O3kYji.
An inspiration ✨ @m-bmoser.bsky.social ; “Brain is the most important tool we have” afterall!
Good luck!
Congratulations, Shefali!
Drosophila models have been highly useful in dissecting the physiological roles of PINK1 and Parkin in #mitophagy
Led by 3 talented PhD students, we wrote a review summarising recent exciting discoveries and discussed these in context of current in vitro studies

Merry Christmas, Annika! 🎄🎅
Congratulations!
Textbooks said neurons don’t burn fatty acids for energy🤔. Our study delivers the first in vivo demonstration that fatty acid oxidation in defined memory neurons fuels memory formation.
Closing chapter of my PhD 🥳, out today in Nature Metabolism💥 @natmetabolism.nature.com
Pablo Villar and team uncover molecules and receptors underlying octopus mating.

Ive seen this work from Prof Liqun Luo’s presented a few times now and its stunning and heroic.
Congratulations Trevor!
A funny conversation with a newcomer at the contra dance in Woods Hole last night:
Me: What brings you to Woods Hole?
He: I’m a neuroscientist, working on octopuses.
Me: I’m a neuroscientist too! I study patches of human cortex that do ridiculously specific things.
He: Oh like that Kanwisher stuff?
Three new papers in Science report that astrocytes are indispensable for neuromodulatory signaling across diverse neural circuits, behavioral contexts, and species.

www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... How astrocytes modulate neural circuits & behavior is a fundamental question. Amazing work led by Kevin in Marc Freeman’s lab to reveal octopamine-tyramine exposure enables astrocytes to respond to neurotransmitters by adrenergic gating.
I got into Hopkins and went to Jefferson for my PhD due to Reasons™️. I had an amazing experience at Jefferson and was able to balance my other needs. Partners, caregiving, proximity to family, hobbies, or cultural community are also valid considerations when selecting an academic home!
Congratulations, Penelope! 🥳
Awesome program (booklet and speaker list) organized by our students for our annual symposium at Snowbird!
Looking forward to a phenomenal weekend of science and catching up with old and new faces at the Midwest #Drosophila Meeting !
P.S Shameless talk plug in -
Oct 18th, 4.15 pm on how Gpdh1 interacts with Tor signaling to control brain growth.

Good luck Shefali!
I’m extremely honored to be a recipient of the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award!
Congratulations Ishmail!
