I finished James White's DOUBLE CONTACT, the 12th & final book in the classic SECTOR GENERAL series. It's a worthwhile series for SF readers. It uses medical-themed problem solving as a vehicle for imaginative aliens, inventive world building and memorable, distinct characters.

It's a surprisingly light read given the subject matter, but even the occasional scientific infodumps are easy to follow. The result is an entertaining and stimulating ride of present-day science fiction.
What starts out as a compelling mystery surrounding a secret scientific project--it's hard to explain more without spoilers--soon gives way to some interesting thought exercises on the nature of reality and the various scenarios that spring from its premise.

And finally, THE SHATTERING PEACE is now finished, marking the OLD MAN'S WAR series as one of the most consistently enjoyable sf series. TSP works well as a standalone novel with its compelling mystery and world building, but why not multiply the goodness and read the whole series?

THE END OF ALL THINGS is also a winner. Here, the problems to solve are predominantly ones of diplomacy, which may sound boring, but is far from it. The writing makes it completely engrossing.
