Here's why we can abolish most of the criminal justice system now without endangering public safety Properly assessing calls to defund the police and other carceral institutions means a proper reckoning with what these systems are actually doing — not what we imagine them to be doing. It's hard to describe bittersweet feeling of putting handmade blankets over shoulders of a shivering senior who just came out of hospital, a young woman suffering in homelessness, trying to fit shoes on feet of a man in socks with frostbitten toes, or socks on hands of man too sick to communicate 😢

Misguided tariffs will not solve the United States’ overdose crisis The United States of America (USA) faces an overdose crisis driven by synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl and its analogues, compounded by emerging adulterants (e.g., xylazine, nitazenes, benzodiaze...

Evidence shows us tariffs & border enforcement won’t reduce drug availability—drug networks adapt & bypass restrictions. The ‘Iron Law’ of prohibition shows harsher enforcement fuels even more potent drugs. A public health approach is the real solution.

Well. I did it. I submitted my book on the history of how the US government has removed Indigenous children from their families. From colonization to removal to boarding schools to today. For middle schoolers.

I think it's the first book of its kind. I can't believe I got to do it.

OPINION: Involuntary care won’t prevent harm from drugs Nanaimo doctor suggests involuntary care is an attempt to hide a problem rather than address it

There are many reasons why someone might refuse a shelter bed: poor treatment, fearful an abusive partner could find them, violence, theft, no place to store belongings, no pets, and the indignity of being kicked out at 7am with nowhere to go. A bed is not a home.

care camp in Midland Ontario… I am offering free tents, free meals and paid wages to a few selected homeless people. The notwithstanding clause is not a practical measure to combat with the fact that we have let in too many people from other countries and put our people on the streets!
