⚠️ This report is a harrowing read and why Baroness Hollins report into stopping seclusion of learning disabled and or autistic people is so important & relevant

Young people can be terrific #socialcare workers but are too often let down by lack of support and, sadly, a toxic work environment. Those are the headlines of our new report asking how the sector can recruit more younger staff. Short thread. kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-an…
A big welcome to @ferrousmu.bsky.social - author of one of our most read online pieces ever, 'Me and Monotropism: A unified theory of autism'.
Published in 2018, still regularly in our top five.

What is Bipolar Disorder? An educational thread🧵🪡
Alas neither Labour UK nor Wes Streeting on here yet, but could we all agree that however MPs vote on AD next week, this is a huge opportunity for the government to announce - finally, after decades of successive governments failing dying people - proper NHS funding of palliative care?
“Autistic people should always be involved in research in a meaningful way and should be listened to at every stage of a project.
By doing that, researchers can avoid inadvertently doing research that is either harmful to autistic people, or which misinterprets the findings."

ADHD people don't lack attention, they lack the ability to direct it. ADHD attention is like Cyclops without glasses often. Often having our attention stolen.
Autism can cause meltdowns and shutdowns by being OVERWHELMED by the emotions of others. Being a human mood thermometer isnt fun.
Courtesy of @autisticbooks.bsky.social, I have picked out 12 books by Autistic authors you should totally read for 2025!
We've got great picks like...
- Stories of Autistic Joy
- Atypical Love (about ND love)
- Lavender Clouds (about Autism + ADHD + mental health)
- and more!

School environments are inaccessible for many autistic and neurodivergent learners (and staff) on many levels, relating to every sense.
Noise. Sight. Smell. Touch. Interoception. Proprioception. Taste. Yes, even vestibular...

Paraphrased: Girls learn early about the importance of “fitting in” and getting along with others. This focus on social interaction may encourage them to camouflage their autism symptoms so that they don’t stand out, which can easily result in the misdiagnoses of borderline personality disorder.
The RFK Jr. pick is demoralizing AF to autistic people (& those who care about them). “Now, autistic people will just have to hunker down & endure an administration that sees us not as people but as evidence of the evils of vaccination.” By @ericmgarcia.bsky.social:

An editorial in this week’s @bmj.com by Anita Charlesworth of the @healthfoundation.bsky.social.
On NHS funding in the recent budget (for England, but we’ll get consequential funding for the other nations in UK).
3rd column is key.

Wes Streeting has very little about social care since becoming Sec of State. He must realise surely that the NHS issues can’t be resolved with also looking at problems in social care!
