International Women's Day celebrated at St Albans Museums

Today, on #InternationalWomensDay, we’re taking a moment to recognise Tessa Wheeler, who led the 1930s excavations at Verulamium.
With the Rose & Crown dig underway, her work is a reminder of the long line of women involved in uncovering St Albans’ past - including those working on site today!

A St Albans tote bag with several 'Commit no Nuisance' pin badges, two packs of postcards and a print drawing of the Commit no Nuisance door, with a pussy cat & a mouse at next to it.

Went to @stalbansmuseums.bsky.social to pick up some utterly lovely 'Commit no Nuisance' goodies! ❤️

For those who don't know, this door is at the Clock Tower in #StAlbans and it inspired a wonderful art project.

Roman mosaic image of a wine cup with two ornate s shaped handles

It's probably a bit early in the day / week to be thinking about wine...

but here's an exquisite little tessellated cantharus (wine cup) with S-shape handles

Detail from the Oceanus Mosaic found in 1931 and now in the excellent Verulamium Museum @stalbansmuseums.bsky.social

Happy #MosaicMonday 🍷

One of our favourite corners in Worlds Connected is the Scents & Spices section where you can smell oud, frankincense, rose water, coffee and spices like grains of paradise and sumac, each with its own global journey.

It’s the last month to explore the exhibition before it closes on 22 February.
