part of this is like, conservatives projecting; part of this is conservatives unable to imagine politics without money; and part of this is dudes who are so out of touch with feminized labor that they think children's birthday parties exist as a spontaneous act of parthogenesis

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

I think my new definition for "mid-career" for #academics is the year that the cat you adopted in grad school and/or the dog you adopted as a postdoc reach the end of their days. This may be the real reason associate profs are so famously glum. It has been a rough few months for household mammals.

Student standing in front of a research poster about banded pumice at Augustine Volcano.

Today’s the #AGU25 day! @colgate.edu undergrad Rylie Berwanger ‘26 presents a model for the origin of banded pumice at Augustine Volcano. Poster V31C-0072.

Not at #AGU25 this year, but everyone who is, please do this! I still contend that posters are infinitely better than talks at engaging people in conversations about science! Please pass that joy on to the next generation of researchers!

Yes! Just joked with a student about counting how many times we see the word “utilize” in conference presentations when “use” would have worked just fine. Also “methodology” when mean they just mean “method.”

En route to #AGU25! Posters V31C-0072 (magma mixing & crystal cargo, Berwanger et al) and V41-0090 (eruption intensity, Koleszar et al): awesome work by @colgate.edu undergrads (blastlab.org) + colleagues at @wwu.edu + USGS-AVO. Geochemistry, grainsize data, field photos: something for everyone!

Also: searching within the meeting program (on the meeting website) versus searching within the planner app = totally different search results! I can find lots of abstracts on the meeting website that the planner doesn't find-- afraid I'm going to miss something!

Someone asked me if the footage of 1,000ft lava fountains on Kīlauea was AI.

PLANET EARTH IS INFINITELY SUPERIOR TO ANYTHING THAT SOULLESS ENVIRONMENT-KILLER COULD EVER CONJURE FROM PILLAGING REAL ART.

Ahem. No, it's not AI. Volcanoes are just that incredible.

The #VGP executive committee wants to make sure students attending #AGU25 get as much out of the conference as they can. So, we are excited to announce a student feedback program! Register using the link below to get feedback from at least one committee member during the conference.

Joy is the radical tool games need to turn eco-anxiety into agency | Opinion Climate doom is overwhelming a generation of players. But a new wave of games is building the belief that change is possible

When it comes to climate change, "games can empower the belief that people can make a difference," says Volha Kapitonava of Positive Impact Games. "The key ingredient that makes this possible, in my opinion, is joy."

Honestly, the topic of the article is less important than this synopsis right here. It is why (in my mind) this country finds itself in such dire straits.

No OSPA at this year's #AGU25, which is disappointing, because it made sure that students had at least 3 scientists come to their poster, ask questions, and provide anonymous (hopefully productive) feedback afterwards. Does anyone know why it was dropped? @hydrology-agu.bsky.social or @agu.org

Yes. And. There are other ways you can help yourself & your community stay healthier as access to vaccines gets more limited. So, you know, *do that*. (Clean the air & mask.)

Some of us have done that all along bc vaccines weren’t enough to protect us (or elders, young children, babies, & carers).

Wide cross sectional cartoon of Mesozoic tectonics of the west coast (mostly emphasizing California). On the left (west), the Pacific Plate and Farallon Plane diverge at an oceanic ridge, with new seafloor being made through decompression melting of the underlying mantle. Working out way east, we see the Farallon Plate decorated with a seamount and some pelagic chert. Then comes the subduction zone, starting with a trench, then an accretionary wedge. The accretionary prism consists of east-dipping thrust fault bounded blocks of rock. A new thrust is developing in the upper part of the underthrust plate. East of that we see a forearc basin developed atop accreted terranes, and then a towering magmatic arc. (The magma is coming from hydration of the mantle wedge.) Plutons are emplaced at depth, and volcanoes erupt up above. Then we cross the suture into North American continental crust, and we see Sevier Orogeny thin-skinned deformation of sedimentary strata above, building up a mountain belt, which sheds sediment eastward into a foreland basin (the Western Interior Seaway).

A photograph of three people making measurements on an outcrop of tephra fall, on a sunny day with blue sky. The top layer is green grass.

Going to finish this #AGU25 poster really soon, but whenever I go looking for a particular outcrop-in-the-field photo I get distracted looking through ALLL the photos again! New details appear every time. Pic from 2024 on Augustine Volcano, with @colgate.edu and @wwu.edu field teams.

"Deconvolving the relationship between subtle shifts in geochemistry and dramatic changes in explosivity at Augustine Volcano, Alaska" - The 2006 eruption at Augustine was small (VEI = 3), but coarse pumice deposits record five large, high explosivity (VEI 4-5+) eruptions over the past 2000 years. Higher explosivity eruptions at Augustine are fueled by a greater proportion of high silica andesite (HSA). "Reconstructing eruptive intensity at Augustine Volcano: Tephra stratigraphy and componentry of the 750 ybp Tephra M eruption." Tephra stratigraphy records a recent VEI 5+ eruption at Augustine Volcano.

The @colgate.edu BLAST (Bubbles, Lavas, and Silicic Tephras) research group is heading to @iavcei.bsky.social 2025! Come and chat about geochem/componentry/explosivity/grainsize on Monday and Friday afternoons: Poster 1.7.23 (Monday, Koleszar et al) and Poster 3.4.26 (Friday, D'Errico et al).

But little by little I kept moving it forward until I had more energy to make it a reality this past year. So if you can relate in any way to that story, I just want to say that I see you & I am here cheering you on...one day your project too will make it into world.

Today’s firings from NOAA/NWS are unconscionable & make us all less safe.

It is wild to see certain weather bros for the first time realize politics affects them. I hope this inspires them to be more proactively engaged in politics instead of loudly and proudly declaring themselves above politics.

Some folks have asked, given recent news, “how do I show my friends/family the impact of NSF?” We have some easy Fact Sheets for you! Here’s a brief thread about this website: new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s... which hosts a ton of useful one-pagers.
