Our paper on enamel proteins from Paranthropus robustus has finally been peer reviewed, please have a read here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Paranthropus robustus has been puzzling scientists since its discovery in 1938 in South Africa, where a high number of fossils have been found.
My photo shows a slightly ovoid-shaped tool knapped from rock crystal which has a slighly yellow tinge, mounted for display against a grey background. The tool measures 6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm. It was recovered from a Mousterian (Neanderthal) level in the Merveilles rockshelter in France during excavations in the 1920s. Six further rock crystal tools were found at the same site.
Something beautiful to start the week!
A rare rock crystal tool made by Neanderthals between 200,000 - 40,000 years ago.
From a Mousterian level at Merveilles rockshelter, Sergeac, Dordogne, France.

Researchers suggest these may have been "practice tools" for teaching knapping or were created due to limited lithic raw material medium.com/the-academic...
