And this will happen repeatedly for you entire career.
Mellissa successfully defended her MSc thesis & is closing in on last edits!! Great thesis, great presentation, great discussion.
Her thesis developed a baits enriched transcriptomics for the zebrafish chemical defensome & used it to look at basal expression in liver, gill, gut & kidney!
Every day is a good day when you are playing hockey
Canada lost at hockey this morning..
My team lost at hockey this afternoon. What a way to bookend my day. Shit.
Preparing for a MSc defense on Tuesday and boy am I excited reading this thesis. Such cool data & this will be so much fun!
Mellissa probably does not share this view of her defense right now.
Kid#1 is at the rink as a referee today. Gold medal game goes into OT and everyone agrees to delay game. They pull a tv with extension cord out onto the ice. Both teams, coaches & refs watch the end. Wonder if the teams got instructions of what not to do, before their game started. Lessons kids.
That sucked so epically. What a shitty end to our best game in this tournament
20 min OT is so good. I hate shoot outs. Just play to win.
Of course it’s OT
Nope. That wasn’t it. Too many missed opportunities in this game.
Ok so Horvat’s face may save this? Please make something happen
I can’t handle this. Multiple crazy opportunities that didn’t go in. Too many men not called and now we are on the PK with a double minor. (Yes this is a clear and reasonable call)
Why yes it’s time for hockey. Got my coffee, a cat on my lap & breakfast. Totally normal for a hockey game? No but I’ve always set an alarm to get up for Olympic gold medal hockey. Go Canada Go 🇨🇦
Graduate Research Day for the Biologists! What a great day with presentations by Max and Hunter and a poster by Molly.
Congratulations to Max for winning a best presentation award!
Emailed an apology with my late text for a grant after being sick with a cold last week. Found out I was the first co-I to send in any of the requested text. Hmm. Not really sure what that says about me.
Yes, I have a cold, don’t feel great but have a midterm scheduled for my class. Yes, I am going in with an N95 mask to give my midterm.
One of the hard things of being a prof is not being able to just stop & rest when you are sick. I mean, if you are really sick, you can go on leave. But you are still typically connected to your lab. If you have milder illness & just want a day in bed? Too bad if you have due dates & teaching.
It’s really exciting. The project is one I’ve really wanted to get going and so the $$ will make this possible. My whole lab was doing a happy dance. 💃🏼 🕺
Hmm. Weird. I feel like I’ve been told that by soooo many people. What do I know? First time funded by CIHR. I’m old but still somehow a Newbie. I’ve got that new prof feeling all over again
It’s official. I am funded by CIHR. First time in my career & so grateful.
The budget cut is bigger than I was expecting, much deeper than the 10% ATB people always talk about. Does not matter.
I look forward to sharing lots of data on reproductive toxicity of chemicals!
Dear people who live in snow regions
1) shoveling the sidewalk is often a city by law. People walking on the snow & trampling it down is NOT enough.
2) I know you are concerned about driving, the roads & yes, the traffic but you still have to look for pedestrians before you cross the sidewalk
Snow day. ❄️❄️❄️
So much snow this January. It’s super weird to have 2 snow days in the same month.
Just in case we are open tomorrow, I’ve moved everything (lecture & tutorial) virtual. Loads of students commute. My class was very empty Friday with people heading home early. Hamilton will have about 35 cm of snow in all, but Toronto up to 60! No need for students to risk getting to campus.
❄️❄️❄️
It’s a cold (possibly very snowy) winter weekend…
Used my base layer & wool socks today to walk down for an appointment
Hockey is canceled tomorrow in anticipation of a lot of snow
Stay warm out there ❄️ 🥶
Calling all aquatic toxicologists!

Introducing our new R package- toxdrc! This will help you assess dose-response curves & select a model for the data.its what you need when you are generating a lot of curves! Jack Salole built this in his MSc, while waiting for cells to ship..
now available at cran.r-project.org/web/packages...
CIHR notice of recommendation has me in the top 10%. I think I’m funded & Im in shock. I have finally convinced a panel that zebrafish are a good model system.
This is a project I have been so excited to get going. After feeling like CoVID impacts would kill my research, this is such relief.
Kid#2’s friends loved Heated Rivalry & asked to go to the bar to watch a Leafs game. My maternal job is well done when my kids are explaining hockey to their friends.
Welcome to Leafs Nation 💙
So much enthusiasm for my 3rd year pharmacology class. Love it when there’s a pile of students wanting to chat after every lecture. Questions are all over- stuff from the lecture, things coming up later, stuff they have wondered about, things from social media… so many ways to engage in class 🧪
Well that was a fantastic ending JT perfect pass to Cowboy!
