We show that economically cooperating with someone creates an obligation to help them when back luck strikes. We find that Republicans do not experience the moral force of this effect, but Democrats and Independents agree that working together obliges you to assist those with whom you cooperate.
I'm very proud of this paper, years in the making, co-authored with the amazing behavioral economists Alexander Cappelen and Bertil Tungodden, "Cooperation Creates Moral Obligations," just published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
