On Friday, the European Commission elected to dismiss one of its former top transport officials. Henrik Hololei had allegedly accepted flights and other freebies from by Qatar, while negotiating the EU's aviation deal with the country.
This is welcome—albeit overdue—accountability.

Last year, we complained about the European Chemicals Agency contracting a consultancy to advise it on PFAS while it advised companies lobbying the EU on the topic. In a win for transparency, it has since upgraded its rules.

We welcome this principled decision that recognises that such a working group was never about transparency: it was about hounding some of the most critical voices in the EU.

The European Parliament must now proactively cooperate fully with law enforcement. But to prevent future corruption, it must also finally reform its whistleblower rules to ensure those who expose such wrongdoing are protected, and monitor the MEPs who are meeting malign foreign actors more robustly.

Yesterday was an important day.
Together with Transparency International and nine national chapters, we concluded our project on Strengthened Enforcement capacities of Public Authorities, also known as STEP EU.
