When I was learning to drive, my Dad would constantly remind me, "Speed magnifies mistakes." This should be the mantra of road designers as well.
It's day 101 of the ICE occupation of MN.
ICE is still here. Today there were multiple abductions just outside Minneapolis, and a persistent ICE presence in downtown. (They were so illegally parked that tow trucks showed up - please enjoy these videos)
Take the survey here: redirect.viglink.com?u=http%3A%2F...
Today is the 36th anniversary of the Capitol Crawl and disabled people are still fighting for basic rights in a society that's actively working to undermine them, surrounded by systemic disablism.
(This is a corrected thread TY to the person who flagged that I said 26th, not 36th!)
it doesn’t have to be like this, even when those in power are doing all the can to make change seem impossible. but you can make choices every day that very literally the material reality of all who share air with you, just by wearing a tool that filters.
It’s been a wild morning outside of City Hall – we had two HSI vehicles illegally parked on Minneapolis police parking right next to City Hall. The tow was called and had started being put on the car when the HSI agents arrived in shame, and were booed out by the several people, staff, & CMs.
New for @theverge.com: i wrote about how Kansas' trans ID law and the "age verification" systems popping up everywhere tie into larger efforts to force trans people to out themselves both IRL and online
At this point it's barely even a boycott, I've just stopped thinking of Target as a place to buy the things I used to buy at Target.
ziibiing.com/shop. Hate Jacob Frey and wanna support Ashley Fairbanks and her rent fundraising efforts? Here's your chance.
“Almost”? MPD sure seems past that
"There is no data showing this is true" is just... false? We did a study less than two years ago showing a pre-eviction notice CAN help! If you want to say you disagree with the study that's one thing, but it's another to deny that any data exists.
It's day 100 of the ICE occupation of MN.
For 100 days, this community has done everything in our power to protect and care for our neighbors.
And today, Jacob Frey failed to do the bare minimum and give neighbors time to recover and put their lives back together.
We'll be 🔗 some 🧵 below.
DHS agents are still here in our community in plain clothes scouting out immigrant owned businesses on Central, knocking on neighbors doors, swapping out licenses plates in cars without registration, and driving dangerously in our community.
Meanwhile, people in Minnesota and around the country are conducting a massive mutual aid effort to get the landlords paid. But it takes time for people to get help! If people can't get the money, landlords are going to be out thousands upon thousands of dollars and they'll never collect most of it
This is one of the things that really shows how shortsighted Frey's decision is. Landlords rarely get paid when they evict someone, even in the long run. In MN, you can't collect rent on an eviction judgment; you need to sue separately. And most rent assistance won't pay arrears for prior residences
most evictions are for “back rent” no?? what in the world are they doing?!
So it's been amazing to see all the rent relief fundraising. Absolutely incredible. But it gets to me that the end result of all this is the money goes to line landlord pockets. And yes families stay housed. That's vital. But it's all of us every day regular degular citizens sacrificing for it.
I would like to know the answer to this question 👇🏼
I’ve been photographing anti-ICE and related yard/window/tree/street signs around Minneapolis. The variety of commercial and especially handmade signs is amazing, as is the urge for people to let their neighbors know they care and are furious in ways big and small. Batch #9
LFG! Every little bit helps.
Fries are pretty good too!
Somewhere I have a photo of a squirrel eating brisket on a trash can in Loose Park in Kansas City. Peak squirrel life if you ask me. Anyway this reminded me of that
the woman who told a judge threatening her with contempt of court that she aims to instigate change from within the DOJ by quote "writing an email in big, bold font" is ready to bring her effective communication and governance skills to Illhan Omar's seat and forgot to kick off in the right district
HCMC all day and twice on weekends.
Still no other reporting on this so far.
this is a great piece. i live right by a freeway and spend a lot of time walking and biking around other downtown-adjacent neighborhoods that used to all be connected until freeways came in and ruined it, so i think about the harms of them and what we lost often
