if mc is your kinda thing the single biggest thing that helped perf for me was pregenerating chunks and setting a worldborder - reading chunks that are already there is wayy faster than generating new ones. does eat disk space though so watch out for that!

4GB is definitely tight, but you might be able to get away with a very lightweight server for a couple of friends and still have a tiny bit of headroom for some small services.

i had the same reaction - the backends supported list is insane 👀 the one thing i’ve never managed to find a good option for though is email… not even the actual email server but just a webmail client that looks like it’s not from 2008 :/

and of course my other big ongoing project is my minecraft servers. i haven’t quite kept track but i think they’re celebrating 10 years of being online now? one of the few projects i never got bored of 💀

currently i’m working on getting Immich set up - if you haven’t seen it, it’s an insanely good photos backup app, basically a self-hosted google photos. photos have always been a high priority to get onto my own storage for me so it’s a no-brainer

i’ve experiemented with filestash recently, and it’s a surprisingly good web file browser and even office document editor - and supports connections over stuff like SFTP, so I can just have my storage drives exposed to this file browser literally just through SSH, it’s really cool!

nice one! i’ve struggled to stick with nextcloud but i have to admit it’s got better and better over time.

it turned out to be a bad year to work in international freight insurance, so i am on the hunt for a new staff engineering role
