๐Ÿง…๐Ÿ”ฅ Also, it was time to renovate our group photo thanks to our annual calรงotada! It was supposed to be a sunny day, but we're actually glad it's rainingโ€”our rivers and reservoirs need it! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง

Biogeochemical Controls on Latitudinal (42ยฐN to 70ยฐS) and Depth Distribution of Organophosphate Esters in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans Large-scale oceanic assessments are key for determining the persistence and long-range transport potential of organic pollutants, but there is a dearth of these for organophosphate esters (OPEs), wide...

Key findings are:

๐Ÿ“Œ OPE show higher concentrations in equatorial waters and decrease toward the poles.
๐Ÿ“Œ The biological pump plays a crucial role in sinking OPEs from surface waters.
๐Ÿ“Œ OPE trends at 2000m depth mirror those at the surface, revealing long-term accumulation in deep waters.

Left panel shows a map with the ocean regions and the location were the paper's experiments were performed. Top right panel shows the correlation between OPE loss due to degradation and bacterial production fold change for OPE EHDPP. Bottom right panel shows an ilustration of bacteria over an OPE molecule.

Microbial activity was closely linked to OPE depletion, showing that bacteria play a key role in breaking down these pollutants. Our findings highlight how environmental conditions shape pollutant biodegradation in the ocean!

In this work, we investigated how marine microbes break down organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans. We found that hydrophobic OPEs degraded significantly in the Atlantic, while cold temperatures in the Southern Ocean slowed the process.
