First time trying a portrait in soft pastels. Not satisfied with how this one turned out. But I learned a lot about the medium in the process.

I think the biggest mistake was using dark gray paper. And fixative turned it into a flaky mess.

The 172 is "Earth Green", but it doesn't really look all that green to me.

I really like these pencils otherwise, so it's a real bummer I have to use greens from other brands for landscapes and stuff like that.

This shows how bad the lightfastness situation is with Pitt pastel pencils. There's zero actual greens with decent lightfastness in there. And yes, that is the FULL set.

So far, I like working with pastel sticks and pastel pencils. Feels pretty similar to charcoal and chalk to me (which is a good thing).

Here's some pencils with highest lightfastness one could add to complement a Pitt Pastel Pencils set:

Caran d‘Ache:
039 Olive Brown
212 Chromium Oxyde Green
245 Light Olive 40%
711 Earth Green
712 Verdigris
719 Dark Phtalocyanine Green
736 Brown Olive 50%

Derwent:
P460 Emerald Green

Their own Polychromos colored pencils don't have this issue.

If you want to draw landscapes, you have to get some extra greens from Derwent or Caran D'Ache. That's not what I expect from a 100+ euro pencil set for artists.

I really don't get what Faber-Castell is doing with the pigment selection in Pitt Pastel Pencils.

Even if you buy their whole set of 60 pencils, there's only two greens with 3/3 lightfastness rating. Almost all greens in the set have only 1/3 (which I believe means 5+ years fade resistance).
