One of the jobs I applied to this year was at a t-shirt printing shop. I applied in person because they’re so close to me (”I’ll be on time every day!”) They immediately said they want someone committed to a long-term career, not leaving when they get a job in their own industry.
It paid CAD 18/hour

This! This is it. I still do this, although sometimes it’s “email an artist friend, ask them what they want to draw, and then write that”

I would strongly suggest newer writers start off with 8-12 page stories—finish that, then do another (different story, or 2nd chapter of first, whatev)
