One big question is if there's any way for HMRC to log and track these changes, or we just have to hope for the best.

Companies House vulnerability enabled company hijacking A major flaw in the Companies House website enabled free access to the “dashboard” of any of the five million registered companies. See it used in this video.

More here, including the original video where John demonstrates the exploit. My side of the conversation mostly consists of saying "no!" incoherently.

The exploit was found by John Hewitt of Ghost Mail Ltd.

He demonstrated it to me, and seemed to be able to ⚠️ change ⚠️ my own registered address.

So this in today's statement is key. We really need firming-up on that word "may".

If you haven't seen the exploit yet, this video is pretty shocking.

I "hack" into the dashboard of a digital consultancy, ClarityDW Ltd, by ⚠️ ⚠️ pressing the back key four times ⚠️ ⚠️

(thanks to Jonathan Phillips of ClarityDW for volunteering)

Companies House has put out a statement confirming that, for five months, every company in the UK was vulnerable to the simple exploit we identified on Friday.

It enabled anyone in the world to view and change their company details.

John-Paul Marks
Chief Executive, HMRC

Sent via email

Dear Mr. Marks,

Sunday 15 March 2026

I am writing to you to request an HMRC investigation into the tax affairs of Richard Tice MP, Deputy Leader of Reform UK, following a recent article in The Sunday Times. As you may be aware, the article suggests that Mr. Tice has avoided paying hundreds of thousands of pounds in corporation tax, and also raises questions about whether he, and companies linked to him, have paid all the tax they owe (“Reform’s Richard Tice avoided nearly £600,000 in tax”, The Sunday Times, 14 March 2026).

The investigation found that Mr. Tice obtained Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) status for one of his companies, Quidnet Reit Ltd. The Sunday Times details how REIT status, as you will be aware, affords a company a three-year grace period during which time the company is not subject to corporation tax. In Mr. Tice’s case, this meant he reportedly avoided paying nearly £600,000 in corporation tax, a figure which he apparently does not dispute, with The Sunday Times saying that he told them he had “independently arrived at the same figure.”

During the initial three-year period it is expected that a company will make every effort to find investors in order to meet the REIT criteria. However, Mr. Tice was unable to provide evidence that Quidnet Reit Ltd had done so when The Sunday Times asked.

Days before the grace period was due to end, Mr. Tice revoked REIT status from Quidnet Reit Ltd. While Mr. Tice claims it is “not unusual for property companies to seek REIT status”, The Sunday Times quotes independent tax expert Dan Neidle as saying that “It’s hard to understand why Mr Tice did this. Small and medium businesses don’t normally use REITs. Other structures are cheaper and more appropriate”. Mr Neidle is also quoted as saying that if there were not real attempts to find outside investors then “it looks like highly aggressive tax planning”.

Considering these reports, it appears that sev…

Only 6% of MPs are not on X. I am one of them.

I chose to step away from a platform that is increasingly fuelling division and radicalisation in our country. We deserve better spaces for debate, and I hope more colleagues will follow and help rebuild healthier conversations.
