What an amazing book! This is the fastest I’ve ever read 900 pages. Pacing was incredible, and King Sorrow’s Freddy Krueger-meets-Smaug-with-Robert-Shaw’s-Voice vibe was so fun.

It’s perfectly natural that people should believe Sherlock Holmes is the main character of 56 stories and 4 novels about Sherlock Holmes. But Doyle was always a clever hand when it came to misdirection and of course the best Sherlock Holmes stories are great because they’re really about John Watson.

Not really sure how to share the latest Oliver Burkeman column, "Navigating by Aliveness," which is too bad--his thinking about A.I. is clarifying. And hopeful. And good humored. He's done some of the best writing I've read about how to live well in our bizarre, disorientating moment.
