There’s big news from Lingscape headquarters: We just signed contracts with our development partners to revamp the entire platform. Over the next few months, we will rebuild the apps and web platform from the ground up.

Am Donnerstag waren wir im Institut für DaF an der @lmumuenchen.bsky.social zu Gast, aus Anlass einer studentischen (!) Tagung zu Sprachlandschaften. @questoph.bsky.social durfte den Eröffnungsvortrag halten und danach tolle Projekte mit den Studis diskutieren, viele davon mit Lingscape umgesetzt.

Some seven years ago, when visiting the IDS for the first time as part of the workshop „Desktop oder App“, we left this little note next to the entrance door. Looks like our merch is pretty persistent in the linguistic landscape ✌️

This statement across the street from the venue became part of the talk, as an example of app’s the secret super power, drawing attention to a hidden layer of social information inscribed in the public sphere. Once you see it, there’s no going back. Not sure, though, why it’s facing the IDS…

This week, Lingscape is visiting @idsmannheim.bsky.social, where we are exchanging ideas with a growing community of language researchers who are interested in participatory approaches. In this context, @questoph.bsky.social talks about our experiences from already nine years with Lingscape.

2. This is a big one. We were finally able to restore the data syncing to the collective map as well as the project maps on the new Carto platform. New uploads in the app will sync to the web maps again automatically, with a maximum delay of 4 hours.

Here’s a little update log for the bug fixes and new features to arrive in the coming weeks/months.

1. The bug on Android leading to upload duplicates in the repository has been fixed.

We’re also trying to fix some nasty bugs in the apps that, e.g., one that leads to duplicate uploads on Android. Do all these things need to happen at the same time, you might ask? Well, that’s what I’ve been asking myself over the last couple of days…

Another thing is the interactive analysis map provided by our friends at CARTO. Their new data platform brings with it a new map base and data warehouse integration that we need to implement.

One of the things we’re working on is the app server itself. After almost 9 years in the game, the platform needs some technical updates and adjustments. We will also roll out new features while at it, so stay tuned.

Speaking of news: When working with the app or accessing the website, you might notice some technical hiccups in the coming weeks.

We’re currently updating the technical base and moving stuff around on servers. We promise to be as quick as possible and avoid downtime as much as possible.

Look at that! Lingscape has arrived on Bluesky. It was about time…

We will use this channel mainly for news about the project but will also try and showcase some of the awesome projects hosted on our platform. And post images occasionally.
